Livermore decimates opposition in Golconda Oaks

By: Tippu Sultan   January 6 , 2024

Trained by Leo D`Silva, Livermore showcased remarkable superiority over the competition in the Gr 2 2400 meters HPSL Golconda Oaks. Taking charge right from the start, Livermore dominated the race effortlessly at Malakpet on Saturday. As the highest-rated horse in the competition, Livermore exuded confidence throughout the race. She took firm control by stepping up the pace approaching the final bend, leaving the other horses stranded and struggling. Jockey Saqlain guided her with supreme confidence, contributing to their impressive victory.

The Oaks race, at most racing centers across the country (except possibly Mumbai), has been struggling to attract a competitive field. Even horses with modest abilities are often spread out at other centers, making the event predominantly one-sided. In a race with a slow pace, jockey Saqlain took control from the beginning, setting a pace that favored his filly the most. Approaching the final bend, he released the brakes, catching the others off guard, and causing them to struggle when asked to accelerate.

Livermore triumphed in splendid isolation, steadily increasing the lead to eventually win by a substantial six-length margin over Original Sin without having to be fully ridden out. Snowpiercer finished a considerable distance behind in third place, with She Can following at an even greater distance in fourth. This marked the second classic victory for Livermore, the daughter of Speaking Of Which and Sherman Oaks, having previously won the Deccan Fillies Championship during the monsoon season.

The consistently performing Candy Girl, trained by Satheesh, had previously won three races in a row before running listlessly in the subsequent outing. However, she made a comeback in the 1600 meters A S Krishna Memorial Cup, a race for horses rated 80 and above. Despite strong backing for Black Onyx to win over Candy Girl, the latter proved her worth.

Candy Girl took an uncontested lead in the race, and apprentice jockey Md Ekram Alam was only prompted to exert more effort when the long shot Miss Little Angel made a spirited run from the outside. Nevertheless, Candy Girl had more to offer, surging ahead when it seemed she might be overtaken, and comfortably securing the victory. Icicle managed to hold off the favorite Black Onyx and secured the third position.

The well-prepared Duke of Tuscany, trained by Laxman Singh, easily won the Hovercraft Plate, a race for three-year-olds that haven`t won before. Jockey Trevor Patel rode him to victory over 1400 meters. Rolls Royce, who had run an erratic race previously, went too fast in front and tired out by the final furlong as he ran out of his reserves. Duke of Tuscany caught up smoothly in the straight and won comfortably. Desert Hero faced issues as the apprentice jockey Shivansh couldn`t control the horse`s outer drift, and had to be satisfied with the second spot. Hoping Queen finished third, and Rolls Royce who expended his energy early in the race weakened and was relegated to the fourth spot. Apart from Rolls Royce, his jockey Nakhat Singh too ended in distress, as he did not meet his subsequent commitments, declared medically unfit to ride.

After achieving three consecutive wins, four-year-old filly Enabling, trained by Laxman Singh, had previously secured a distant second place to Acrobat in an 1800-meter race. Now brought back to a sprint, Enabling, was generously priced as last start dominant winner, Miss Maya, trained by Hilton Sequeira cornered maximum support to win the 1200 metres Ranga Reddy Memorial Cup (Div I), race for horses rated 40 to 65.

Miss Maya initially trailed behind Classical Music but approaching the final bend, surged ahead. However, Enabling, making a strong challenge in the final furlong from way off the pace, demonstrated a powerful finishing effort, with jockey Trevor Patel guiding the less-favored horse to victory by just under a length at the finish line. Adbhut secured the third position, while Classical Musical finished a distant third. The punters` preference for Miss Maya, was potentially influenced by the shorter race distance and the 3.5 kg weight claim by jockey Shivansh. It was reckoned that the trip of six furlongs was pretty sharp for Enabling.

The favoritism for the 1400 metres Ranga Reddy Cup (Div II), a race for horses rated 40 to 55, alternated between Blazing Gun and Toffee, with the latter, a last start winner, getting firm support in the end to give a strong performance. The lesser fancied Samrat from the stables of Jasbir Singh who had the services of apprentice jockey Kuldeep Singh, overtook the front-running Toffee after crossing the first furlong and then ran freely in the front, establishing a big lead by the time the horses approached the final furlong. The lead held good as Toffee and Blazing Gun who gave a chase, found that the front-runner had gone beyond their reach. Samrat won by two lengths while Toffee necked out Blazing Gun to get the runner up berth. This was the first win for five-year-old mare Samrat from 11 outings.

Apprentice Kuldeep Singh rode the lesser fancied winner, Ragnarok, to a repeat victory in the Ranga Reddy Cup (Div I), a race for horses rated 40 to 65. Despite the widespread support for Santa Barbara and Happy Go Lucky, the top bets, they failed to meet expectations, just like in the lower division of the same race. Ragnarok, a long shot from Donald Netto`s stables, led comfortably throughout the straight, securing a win by over four lengths. First Class finished second, and Mark My Day held off Clefairy to take third place. Happy Go Lucky couldn`t keep up and finished poorly after chasing the eventual winner into the straight, while Santa Barbara never showed up. Nowadays, predicting a winner based on the market trend or horse form has become challenging. Punters often misjudge when overlooking consistent form, and sometimes, well-performing horses unexpectedly underperform, turning the sport into more of a chance game than a skillful one.

Mix The Magic initially opened as the favorite for the 1100 meters Aberader Plate, a race for horses rated 20 to 45. However, the betting preferences shifted, and Final Judgment became the favoured choice, with significantly lower odds. Deccan Daisy, trained by Prasad Raju, was the third most sought-after horse in the race.

As the race unfolded, Final Judgment aggressively led the field in the straight, while Mix The Magic struggled to accelerate after the final turn. Despite Final Judgment having a substantial lead, the horse appeared increasingly vulnerable as Deccan Daisy, ridden by jockey Sai Kumar, made a strong finishing move. The two horses crossed the post in a close finish, with Deccan Daisy narrowly securing the victory. That`s My Love claimed the third position and saved place money.

In the final race of the day, the Moment of Glory Plate (Div I), a race for horses in the lowest category, there was lively betting on Inderdhanush, trained by Mukesh Kumar, who had not won in 17 previous outings. There was also support for Golden Inzio. Apprentice jockey Shivansh urged Inderdhanush to take the lead from the beginning, and the favourite managed to hold on to win by a very narrow margin. Hurricane Bay, a long shot, made a significant effort and finished strongly, only to be thwarted by the winning post that came slightly earlier. The second favourite Golden Inzio who gave hopes at one stage, weakened to finish third.
