Star Forever finally comes good

By: Tippu Sultan   February 25 , 2024

After two disappointing performances as a strong favourite, Star Forever, trained by Prasad Raju, redeemed herself with a triumphant display in the 1200 meters N Nari Reddy Memorial Million, a terms race for three-year-olds, which was the highlight of Sunday`s races at Hyderabad. Widely expected to win, Lashka led from the start and maintained the lead throughout the race. However, as the race approached its conclusion, Lashka began to falter, allowing Star Forever to find her stride and overtake the front-runner just before the finish line. Flying Fury secured the third position.

Star Forever`s victory came as a surprise to many, especially considering her previous Leo D`Silva trained Caslistoga was the second favourite in the race. Jockey Ashaad Asbar, who has been struggling to guide winners despite riding many fancied runners, took charge from the start this time. Although Lashka initially enjoyed an uncontested lead, it failed to accelerate when needed most and ultimately surrendered without much resistance.

Imperia, trained by Ananth Vatsalya, secured victory in the 1200 meters Time And Place Plate (Div I), a race designated for maiden three-year-olds, benefitting from three previous race runs. Arion One, trained by Hilton Sequeira, entered as the short-priced favourite. However, Sequeira, known for his prolific wins, appears to be experiencing a downturn or perhaps his horses are failing to meet expectations. Despite Arion One`s pedigree and promising workouts, being favoured to win in her debut run, she couldn`t match Imperia`s performance. Jockey Deepak Singh guided Imperia to take the lead, establishing a considerable distance ahead by the final furlong, leaving the favourite to close the gap only at the finish line. Gun for Gold trailed behind in third position by a significant distance.

Under the guidance of apprentice jockey Kuldeep Singh, Alpine Girl, trained by Jasbir Singh, exhibited remarkable speed in the 2400 meters Mystical Trophy race, designated for horses rated 40 to 66. Despite strong competition from Crown Witness, aiming for a third consecutive win, and Caraxes, the betting favourites in what seemed like an evenly matched contest, Alpine Girl emerged victorious with an impressive burst of acceleration. Caraxes maintained the lead from the start and held on until the final furlong, with Crown Witness giving chase. However, just as Crown Witness appeared poised to overtake the leader, Alpine Girl unleashed a breathtaking burst of speed from way off the pace, effortlessly passing the battling frontrunners to secure a comfortable victory. Crown Witness finished second, followed by the late-rallying Voice of a Dream. Caraxes weakened to finish fourth.

Donald Netto`s trained Ragnarok, who had previously finished third after securing a hattrick of wins, returned to form in the 1200 meters Telangana Race Horse Owners` Association Trophy (Div I), a race designated for horses rated 40 to 65. Jockey Kuldeep Singh guided Ragnarok to take the lead within the first 100 meters, and from thereon, the favourite enjoyed a comfortable run to the finish line, with no competitors from behind posing a significant threat to his victory. Tripurari managed to hold off Proud Mary to secure the second position. Amid high expectations, The Inheritor, trained by B Mukesh Kumar, received significant backing to clinch victory in the lower division of the race. Despite having put up a close second-place finish behind Commanding Knight in his previous outing, The Inheritor had been absent from racing for 83 days. However, the considerable amount of betting on him ultimately proved futile. Adbhut, trained by Leo D`Silva and known for his speed, swiftly took the lead from the start, leaving The Inheritor in pursuit. Adbhut maintained a clear advantage throughout the race, crossing the finish line with a commanding margin of over four lengths. Meanwhile, The Inheritor faltered in the final furlong, failing to secure a place in the frame. The late-charging Shadow Fax and Miracle Mary claimed the subsequent positions behind the victorious Adbhut.

Once again, the age-old adage proved true in the 1600 meters Chief Justice Trophy (Div I), a race tailored for horses rated 40 to 65, where Divine Destiny, previously a runner-up to Lady Danger, entered as the favourite over stablemate Trishul, who had previously disappointed as a favourite. This time, jockey Ashad Asbar piloted Trishul to the front right from the start, seizing an uncontested lead. Despite being considered the lesser-fancied runner, Trishul maintained dominance throughout the race and secured victory by a significant margin. Meanwhile, Divine Destiny faltered in the final furlong, allowing First Class and Sundance Kid to claim second and third positions, respectively.

In what seemed like an open betting scenario, Leo D`Silva`s Hurricane Bay clinched a narrow victory over the late-surging Fly To the Stars in the 1600 meters Chief Justice Trophy (Div II), a race catering to horses rated 40 to 65. Path Of Peace, trained by Vittal Deshmukh, was the preferred choice to claim victory, but the five-year-old gelding fell short of expectations due to jockey Aashad Asbar encountering difficulty finding a clear path in the straight. Despite settling in around fourth position early in the race, Asbar had to continually search for an opening. Burgundy Black led for much of the straight stretch, but Hurricane Bay, positioned in pursuit, managed to overhaul the frontrunner and secure the lead, ultimately fending off Fly Me To the Stars` late challenge. Path of Peace finished strongly to secure third place, surpassing the longtime pace-setter Burgundy Black.

Whenever two horses of more or less equal merit run in a race, it is always the one with the higher price that invariably wins. It happened yet again in the 1600 metres Chief Justice Trophy (Div I), a race for horses rated 40 to 65. Divine Destiny who had run second to Lady Danger was the favourite ahead of the stablemate Trishul who was a failed favourite. This time out, Ashad Asbar was successful in taking Trishul to the front from the word go and the lesser fancied runner enjoyed the uncontested lead and had the race won a long way from home. Divine Destiny gave up in the final furlong with First Class and Sundance Kid finished second and third respectively.

In the 1400 meters Olympic Flame Plate, a race tailored for horses rated 20 to 45, Lady Racines, trained by Donald Netto, entered as the firm favourite. However, the favourite encountered issues at the gates and was subsequently withdrawn from the competition. Indian Temple, trained by Sreekant, surged to the front right from the start and quickly established an insurmountable lead in the straight, ultimately claiming victory without facing any serious challenges, with jockey Suryaprakash at the reins. Fara secured the second position, followed by Wandering Warrior.
