Ave Maria wins feature event in tight finish

By: Tippu Sultan   February 1 , 2010

Racing on Monday was a delight to punters who put blind faith in the fancied runners as race after race saw these horses justify the favoritism with emphatic wins in majority of races. Prasad Raju trained Ave Maria won the Telangana Cup, a mile long race for Category II race, with a degree of difficulty in a three horse finish. Jockey Suraj Narredu managed to steer the favourite to safety but then backed out of his other engagements apparently troubled by his injured wrist.

Pleasing Display led the field followed by Fly By Wire, Temple Bells, Chiquelle and Ave Maria while Nano War brought up the rear. Pleasing Display threw a scare when he kicked on merrily in the straight but shot his bolt under pressure inside the final 100 metres. Ave Maria came up with a good burst of speed to take charge but was hard pressed to retain his lead by Nano War and Fly By Wire who both closed with a big rush.

Ananth Vatsalya trained Zambo Anga was backed to the exclusion of his rivals in the 1400 metres Jockey Kavan Kariappa Memorial Cup (Div I), a Category III races which featured horses which had hither to not performed. Jockey Imran Chisty kept the favourite in mid group as Baywatch Babe set the pace. Zambo Anga steadily gained places in the straight and with a furlong out, burst clear of the field to win by a comprehensive margin. Miracle came from way behind to finish second Baywatch Babe ran on to be third. Ruffiano, who had advertised his readiness to strike, won the lower division of the race. True to market prediction; the favourite collared the front running Anemometer inside the distance post to post a comfortable win over late rallying Citi Dancer. Anemometer put up stiff resistance before losing steam to finish third.

Vijay Monarch was more fancied than Red Connect in the Perceived Value Plate (Div I), a race for maiden three year olds. The latter had run a good forward race and as such he had better credentials. Red Connect had no problem in disposing of his rivals after taking over the running at the top of the straight and winning with great deal of ease from The Himalayas and favourite Vijay Monarch who was outpaced from the start. The lower division of the race too saw a similar trend, with Rosemead who had finished a neck behind third to Vijay Damini being displaced form favouritism by Cascading Glory. In the event, Rosemead ran true to his form by getting the better of Cascading Glory which was as expected by those who are only guided by the book of form. Rosemead took over the running from a forward position with a furlong and half to go and then held on comfortably from Cascading Glory who failed to catch up with the front runner despite all out effort by his jockey.

Miss Everywhere was strongly fancied to win the Storm Trooper Plate (Div I) and the progeny of Mull of Kintyre looked a cut above the rest. Her chances were also further enhanced due to the five kg allowance claimed by the trainer. Apprentice jockey Venkat had Miss Everywhere take over the running after traversing some distance from the start and had no problem in steering the favourite to win by a widening margin of four lengths. Leading Light who lost ground at the start, finished on well to occupy the runner up berth. If one were to ignore the last run of Chesapeake where he had run below his known capabilities, the Leo D`Silva trainee looked a cut above the rest and the inspired betting on him was not exactly a surprise. Chesapeake won untroubled from Pythagoras, Phar Lap and Royal Tune who finished within striking distance of each other.

Lesser fancied Strategic Command proved too formidable in the 1800 metres Ballerina Star Plate. After traveling in the mid group till entering the homestretch, Strategic Command gained places quickly and sped away form the rest to win as she pleased. Cabochon was a poor second while favourite Fleeting Wish was not sighted.
