Burst Of Speed defies handicap

By: Goldie Boy   March 3 , 2010

Burst Of Speed had no peers in the field of 13 out to contest the 1,600m Red Chief Cup, the lone trophy framed in Wednesday`s six-event card. The Daniel David-trained filly, who was slapped a stiff penalty upon her bloodless recent victory, took up the challenge to defy the handicapper, and she achieved the task in style, thanks to apprentice Arman Khan`s riding allowance of 3.5kg. The expanding odds – from 7-4 to 7-2 – of the Eljohar daughter did worry her followers but once the starter dispatched the field and Burst Of Speed went into her customary lead, it became apparent that she was out to produce a businesslike performance. Although up-front, the apprentice held her on tight reins even as speedsters like Tokyo Drift, Royal County down and Quaoar were within a sniffing distance. Arman let her go from the halfway mark and Burst Of Speed was quick to lead a merry dance.

Gaining confidence from the easy victory of Burst Of Speed, Arman was back into the winner`s enclosure after Ardent Prince recorded a start-to-finish victory in the 1,200m Fiddler Handicap. Drawn inside in an another 13-horse field, Ardent Prince was quick to shoot into the lead and maintained the advantage throughout to peg back a strong challenge from the public choice, Highland Magic, who had joined the leader from the halfway mark but could never manage to overtake the leader despite apprentice B. Mahesh`s best efforts.

The 1,100m Aldolfito Handicap, for horses in the upper classes, was also a close contest between the two less-fancied runners – Asiatic Star and Palme Dor – while Daniel`s Fly For Sure cornered most of the wagering at 7-4. Plame Dor led from the start but the Shafiq Khan-trained mare, ridden by apprentice Babu Singh, never managed to draw away from her rivals. The mare was also disturbed by another speedster Diomedes and as a result of this she had nothing to offer when challenged by the ultimate winner Asiatic Star who always galloped in close attendance.

Kestrel and Maznavi received much support in the 1,200m Argus Handicap but it was 8-1 shot Avalanche Star who emerged victorious. Jockey Kishore Kadam held the winner close behind Agility and Apyrous till the top of the turn and jumped into the fray soon after. The winner faced some resistance from Agility inside the last furlong but the handicap advantage of the Rutherford Alford-trained filly provided the required thrust to help him sail away, once in the lead. The fancied pair was never a threat to the winner at any stage of the race, leaving Duke Of Windsor, despite his slow start, to fight it out for the third slot with Agility.

Awesome Indian scored his long overdue victory, also at the promising odds of 9-4, in the 1,200m Crystal Man Handicap. Jockey Md Islam, partnering the Bharath Singh-trained youngster, had the horse, settled behind Cuba Libre till a furlong from home before shooting into the winning lead. Debonair Girl, who raced in third, pounced on the tiring leader to place a good second.

Golden Glob completed the formality of winning the 2,000m Artemis Handicap. The 1-3 hot favourite, shot into the lead from the start of the race and maintained it through out the journey to let his other two rivals in the field – Andrology and Sanqusar – to fight out for the minor placings.
