Corbett obliges in feature at nourishing odds

By: Sridhama   August 26 , 2010

Attaollahi trained Corbett won the Jayacharaja Wadiyar Memorial Gold Cup, a mile race for horses rated 80 and above, the feature event of Thursday`s races at the expense of Blink. Stablemate Spearhead was backed down spiritedly but the five kg claimer Naushad Alam was not up to handling the favourite as Spearhead lost steam in the straight to finish a poor fifth. Corbett, who was loitering at the wrong end of the field till the final turn, came home with a big run to get the measure of Blink who had shaped to win. The day`s races were held in soft underfoot conditions but nevertheless five fancied runners won in the card of eight events, with Ryan Marshall recording a rare double.

Corbett had run in good company and had finished second behind Sprint Star in the Harvins Bangalore 2000 Guineas where his stablemate Spearhead had finished fifth. Spearhead had more supporters than Corbett as he had showed tremendous improvement during the summer season and had achieved a higher rating. Spearhead raced ahead of the pack at the final turn but the apprentice was not able to goad him to put a stronger effort. Blink surged ahead of Spearhead and looked like pulling it off as Star Assembly who was the nearest pursuer was not going anywhere. However, Corbett`s flourishing run ensured that the lesser fancied runner had the measure of the front runner in the shadow of the post.

One For The Money who had finished a good second to Nessie, shed his maiden ranks when swamping the opposition by a margin of seven lengths. Airplay, who was running after a setback in training, badly needed this run but he did well to beat Elite Land to the second spot. Airplay should oblige next time out preferably over an extended trip.

Alpha Baby who was squeezed out at the start and lost position, finished with a strong run in the hands of apprentice Vaibhav but locally based Miss Ruby who was the most consistent runner during the recently concluded season, put in a speedy effort and had the race sewn up before the favourite could warm up. Apprentice Rajesh Kumar steered Miss Ruby. Here Comes The Don was third.

The Kanva Plate saw Turf Raider being lodged the favourite and he was not seen in serious business. Solitary Champ who was withdrawn at the gates last time as he was fractious, this time went in easily and came out to lead from the word ‘go`, never allowing anyone to come close to him and won easily. Super Spear who needed this run finished a notable second and is the one for the notebook.

Money came pouring in on Secret Vision in the Pune Plate even as favourite Atomic Queen lost supporters steadily. Secret Vision travelled wide all the way but put his head in front inside the final 100 metres. However, he could not sustain as Suave, a progeny of Burden of Proof, who relished the soft underfoot conditions, produced a big run to win quite easily in the end. Blue Origin, who was not given a forceful ride, was a close second ahead of Secret Vision. Atomic Queen was never in the hunt.

Persian Princess finally found her bearings in a race over a mile and shed her maiden ranks. Yes I Can drifted out from a straight course and lost a chance to record an encore but managed to neck out Stampede for the runner up berth.

Sneak A Peak was another who shed his maiden ranks as a favourite winning at the expense of Miss Marvelous who was a noteworthy second.

With the withdrawal of Game Face from the first race, Callidora had nothing much to beat and won comfortably from Major Impression.
