Remember Me wins feature on day of favourites

By: Frankel   February 13 , 2014

Imtiaz Sait trained Remember Me justified the favouritism in the 1400 metres Oyster Cove Trophy, a race for horses rated 60 to 86, the feature event of Thursday`s races. Barring one race, the day was dominated by fancied runners swelling the confidence of punters that they could have a good day after all. The day`s lone upset came through Sky Lantern who provided trainer Ivor Fernandes with a rare win.

Remember Me was well backed to win the seven furlong race as the four year old had finished a noteworthy third behind Silver Streak earlier in the season. Jockey Dashrath Singh had Remember Me relaxed in the rear as Step Up set the pace followed by Myla Rose, Mountbatten and Celtic King. Inside the final two furlongs, Myla Rose shot ahead but could not sustain the lead for long as Remember Me who was given a clear run on the wide outside, swooped on the front runners with ease and was sighted a winner long way from home. Mountbatten covered places in the final furlong to finish second ahead of Celtic King who too was showing some zest after the cause had been lost.

Fribourg was backed down spiritedly to win the 1200 metres A F S Talyarkhan Trophy, a race for maiden three year olds. The race is named after a famous commentator who was fluent in his writing as well as in his radio talks and was well respected for his column Take It From Me. The flow of money on Fribourg was so much that another debutant Greek God, despite noteworthy work outs went to the post at lucrative odds. Greek God bounced into the lead from the outside draw and was traveling well within himself when storming clear in the straight. Fribourg was flat footed and could only finish a tame second ahead of Lhotse.

Swashbuckler was running in a handicap race after running the Graded Ruia Trophy where he was in hopeless pursuit of Murioi. He was quoted at liberal odds as Snowing too was backed on her experience of running in the Oaks. After being held back in the rear, Swashbuckler made smooth progress on the wide outside to get the better of front running Snowing in the final stages of the race. Janis Bay showed some resolution when finishing third.

Celsius shot ahead inside the final furlong and threatened to cause an upset in the 1000 metres Forest Flair Plate, a race for horses rated 40 to 66. However, the six year old mare`s attempt came to naught as War Horse picked up steam and easily overhauled the front runner though the margin of half a length did not highlight the superiority of the favourite. Hills And Heights ran on to finish third after being prominent till the final 200 metres.

Ivor Fernandes recorded one of those rare wins when Sky Lantern chased Zafirah into the straight in the 2000 metres Great Investment Plate, a race for horses rated 1 to 26 and sped away to establish a huge lead before the others could wake up and mount their challenge. Sky Lantern won untroubled by a widening margin of over seven lengths from Double Or Quits and Tara. Sky Lantern was the only long priced winner of the day.

Cooji Katrak trained Tammy O was considered so superior in the 1000 metres Emperado Plate (Div I), a race for horses in the lowest category that the four year old was offered miserly odds. Tammy O shot clear in the straight and sped away for an effortless win over Rocky Balboa and 10 year old Golden Spurs. Another fancied runner Sun Hot had no problem in winning the lower division of the race, getting the better of front running Plan B in the final furlong. Prince ran on to finish third.

Wasabi, from the yards of Faisal Abbas, was another who was thought invincible in the 1200 metres Blue Horizon Plate. Jockey Srinath did not encounter too many problems while driving out Wasabi to a comfortable win over Gran Amigo who slackened when challenged by the favourite. Trainer Antia`s Speed Baby ran on to finish third. The trainer had a good day as four of his horses were in the money at good odds.
