Machiavellianism gets his due in BTC Cup

  July 12 , 2014

Easily the best horse in fray, Machiavellianism asserted his class in the highly competitive Gr 2 BTC Anniversary Cup, a rich race for four year olds and over, with a stunning run in the final furlong to measure favourite Bullseye. The dual Group I winner had gone down narrowly in a mile long graded race earlier in the season and he got enough recompense for his talent by winning over what was considered a furlong short for his style of running.

The race is the best of its kind in India with the top milers and sprinters contesting for the plum. Bullseye who would have been a serious challenger in the Sprinters Cup had she not been sidelined by a ban due to her testing positive for Boldenone allegedly due to sabotage had recorded a highly impressive win over six furlongs. All her wins had come over six furlongs and she was essaying the extended trip for the first time against this quality opposition and if she were to answer the question in the affirmative about tackling the trip with equal brilliance, the race was hers for the asking. Invincible Prince had been supplemented as a final entry as the trainer believed that the horse had in him to make a mark in this company. Rock Star and Supreme Star were the others who were expected to be the ones to fight it out.

Rock Star unexpectedly did the job of a pace setter and expended himself so much that he was legless in the final furlong. Bullseye, who was racing in a handy position, spurted ahead and shaped to win as her opponents had some leeway to cover. However, things took a dramatic turn once Machiavellianism showed up with a clear run. The multi-classic winner picked up great speed and got the better of Bullseye closer home to win by a length. Invincible Prince, who graced the wrong end of the field all through the trip, came wide into the straight but came up with a huge run but fell short in the end. He was unable to get past Bullseye by a short head. Bullseye, though beaten over seven furlongs, has no issue about the distance as she was beaten by a vastly superior horse which had two Group I wins to his credit. Invincible Prince showed tremendous improvement and had his jockey positioned him well, he could have stirred things up. Supreme Star, who had proved near invincible over a mile, lacked the speed to make a mark in this trip despite being positioned well. Interestingly, a miler had the better of a sprinter and a seven furlong specialist to win this prestigious race. A perfect recipe for a good race!

Jaggy Dhariwal trained Coldstream won the 1400 metres Nawab M Arshad Ali Khan Memorial Cup, a terms race for three year olds, with a start to finish mission, thwarting the spirited bid of The General by a diminishing short neck. Baracchus who was at the wrong end of the field came up with a spirited challenge but had too much leeway to cover and had to settle for third slot ahead of Rustic Sunrise in a tight finish.

Suleiman Attaollahi trained Coriolis who had let down as a firm favourite last time out with a dismal run, swamped the opposition in the 1600 metres S N Harish Memorial Trophy, a race for three year old maidens. Jockey Trevor Patel had him dictate the pace from the start and in the straight, the progeny of English Channel skipped away to record an impressive win. Flyingangel was second ahead of Laurita while Anarosa who was in the rear, ran on to finish fourth.

Favourite Frankness flopped miserably in the 1400 metres K N Guruswamy Memorial Trophy, a race for horses rated 60 and above. Long shot Lad Star who shot into the lead in the final furlong survived a late blitz by Alcazaba and won by the proverbial whisker. Frenemee who did the front running stayed on to finish third.

Amit Cady trained Irish Song fought out a stirring battle with Castle Stuart and got stronger close home to win the 1400 metres R M Puttanna Memorial Trophy (Div I), a race for horses rated 40 to 65. Beauty Is Truth was expected to break her maidens rank but finished a tame third. Arjun Mangalorkar trained Alfons De Borja ran over the opposition in the lower division of the race, taking charging at the final bend and winning by a widening margin of eight lengths over Ungoogleable and Noble Reward. Santa Ana who was at the wrong end of the field covered acres of ground to finish fourth.

Suraj Narredu was earlier successful on lesser fancied Summer Dawn who shot ahead inside the final 200 metres and sped away from the opposition to win the 1600 metres Pune Plate, a race for horses rated 0 to 25, traditionally reserved for trainer Amit Cady. Abba was far away second.
