Acclaimed is the Dasara Sprint Champion

By: Stay Thirsty   October 1 , 2015

Suleiman Attollahi trained Acclaimed overcame the sharpness of trip and the opposition to win the Gr 3 1200 metres Mysore Dasara Sprint Championship, a terms race for three year olds and over, the feature event of Thursday`s Mysore races. Rains forced an interruption after three races had been gone through but it was possible to complete the next two races after brief delay. Rains again re-visited even as the Sprint Championship was being held. The authorities decided to cancel the last two races of the day as the track had not sufficiently recovered from last week`s barrage of rains and the ones that upset the schedule during the course of the day.

Acclaimed, the seasoned campaigner in the fray, was the favourite to win though the trip of six furlongs was reckoned to be sharp. But then he was only the horse with experience as well as class as the remaining older horses hadn`t won in terms races. Three year old Referent, though considered a good quality horse, had not met good company and he was bound to find himself out of depth in this company even if most horses in the fray hadn`t been in the best of form.

Suraj Narredu took Constantine on a start to finish mission followed by Acclaimed, Shivalik Star, Country`s Nobility, Assiduous and Smile Stone. The only change that happened during the run in for home was Acclaimed went quickly into the lead and Shivalik Star, the winner of this race last year, threatened to overhaul the front runner. But the front runner pulled out that bit extra and skipped away to win comfortably from Shivalik Star who failed to change gears when needed most. I`M Different held off Assiduous for the third slot.

Pratap Kamat trained long shot Jamais Vu barely lasted out to win the 1200 metres Air Force Trophy (Div I), a race for horses rated 20 to 45 and based in Mysore. Sahanawaz took Jamais Vu on a start to finish mission and the filly came under intense pressure by the relentless pursuit of favourite Bourbon Street on whom jockey Rajesh relied more on the whip rather than persuasion. Jamais Vu managed to retain the slender lead and managed to spare half a length to Al Dorado who covered acres of ground in the final furlong to come within striking reach of the front runner. Bourbon Street who burst his blood vessels, weakened to finish third. Bourbon Street is perhaps the only horse which has migrated from Mumbai but hasn`t found winning easy against the local opposition.

The speedy Amigos was backed strongly to win the 1200 metres Mrs Amani Ramachandran Memorial Trophy, a race for horses rated 20 to 45. The normally choosy Suraj has of late been accepting some dud rides and punters paid the price for putting trust on these horses because of the jockey factor. In the event, Amigos led all the way and Trevor had little difficulty in keeping the horse in front of Quarter Cask and Saturday Affair. Arziki was a goner right from the word `go`.

The fact that Lokanath does not believe in the abilities of jockeys like Suraj but reposes greater faith in jockeys like Adarsh who win once in a year when he is fancying a horse strongly was highlighted by the fact that Stunning Grey was backed to on money favouritism despite the fact that nobody knew when the said jockey had won his last race. She`s Stunning was a serious horse in the fray and despite cutting an erratic course, managed to comfortably beat Musical Treasure and Little Brown Jug.

Lokanath trained Khaleesi won the 1100 metres K T Shamaiah Gowda Memorial Trophy defing expectations when winning the race for lowest category races at huge odds. Favourite Edge of Eternity took charge on turning for home and shaped to oblige expectations as he had big lead over the rest going into the final furlong. Khaleesi who had been brought down to this class for a touch, decided to defy everyone with a sustained run in the hands of apprentice jockey Nazerful Alam to bring off the biggest upset of the day. Quite often trainers don`t know when their horses are ready to strike and when they are not and invariably punters get the wrong end of the stick as they back when they think that right money is on these horses.

Bobby trained Catwalk Queen Spring was so superior to the opposition in the 1400 metres Yadavagiri Plate, a race for horses in the lowest category that the five year old overcame a poor ride and all the problems she encountered en route to finally record a comfortable win over New Sunrise and Saratoga Spring. Inside the final furlong, jockey Irvan Singh on the favourite found a fall of horses in front and had to pull the horse on the wide outside. Despite this, the five year old covered acres of ground briskly and flew home to record a convincing win.
