Alaindair maintains winning streak

By: Tippu Sultan   August 22 , 2016

Vittal Deshmukh trained Alaindair returned to the track two years after winning the Gr 1 Indian Turf Invitation Cup and accomplished the task of winning the Gr 2 Nizam`s Cup with ease at Malakpet on Monday. The progeny of Multidimensional won both the races he participated at Bangalore during the summer season and made light of the opposition when subduing the field with a patented burst of speed in the final furlong.

Alaindair showed out in the paddock parade and since he had remained unbeaten at Bangalore and was taking on the opposition on the same terms as on earlier occasions, there was little reason to doubt his continued supremacy. Y S Srinath who has been associated with all the successful efforts of Alaindair was astride the champion. In a fast run race, Booker Jones decided to make full use of the light weight that he was carrying by going at fast clip, with Cameroon in the second position ahead of Costa Del Sol and Alaindair. The order remained the same till approaching the final bend when there was frenetic activity to gain forward position. Booker Jones continued to enjoy the run in front but it was clear that he was leading only on sufferance as Cameroon and Alaindair came up with menacing runs. Alaindair easily overhauled the horses in front and stormed clear in the final furlong for an impressive win. Booker Jones who was squeezed out at the rails by Cameroon, had to be angled out for a clear run and he came up with a second wind but Cameroon who had surged ahead, held on gamely to get the runner-up berth. Costa Del Sol was out of depth and finished fourth. The second, third and fourth-placed horses were all less half a length of each other.

Woman O War who was once a rousing performer, had lost her way after being campaigned over extended trips. With sufficient rest and change of stables, the K R K Raju trained Woman O War had given indication that she could bounce back in the 1600 metres Basalat Jah Memorial Cup, a Category I race as the scales vis-à-vis her last effort, were also in her favour. Despite a sluggish jump, Woman O War was not unduly affected by this as the pace was slow in the early part and she could join the bunch without having to expend her energy. Always Bullish and Aventus raced ahead of the rest with Policy Maker, Galiat, Machiavellianism racing within striking distance of each other while Woman O War and Time For Fun were in the rear bunch. Rounding the final turn, Always Bullish continued to fight hard before surrendering the initiative to Woman O War who loomed large in the final furlong. Woman O War easily sailed past the front-runner and won with great deal of comfort from late finishing Time For Fun who travelled wide into the straight and could have finished closer with a better quality ride than the one given by Rathore. Suraj Narredu excelled on Woman O War with a very pragmatic ride. Galiat ran on well to stave off Machiavellianism to claim the third spot. Woman O War`s last win had come 295 days ago.

Favourite Handy Man who chased Vijays Honour into the straight, took over the running inside the final 300 metres but was unable to sustain the lead when Silver Dollar came up with a powerful run in the 1400 metres Chaitanya Chakram Cup, a Category II race. Silver Dollar, in the hands of Suraj Narredu, responded well to the urgings of the jockey to storm clear and win with ease from Handy Man. Avantika ran on to take the third place.

Prasad Raju trained Legend brought off a well backed coup in the 1200 metres Indiscretion Plate (Div I), a Category II race. Legend who was quoted at long odds to begin with, was backed spiritedly and the noticeable support for the progeny of Top Class was evident in the betting ring. The favourite was Crown Royal. Legend who was in the rear end of the field, improved places briskly in the straight and burst clear in the final stages of the race to win by a widening margin of three lengths. Roi`s Cruise held off Crown Royal by a whisker to get the runner up berth. Satheesh trained Mighty Swing recorded an encore with an aggressive performance in the lower division of the race. Despite a tardy start, City of Wonders was brushed up to race with the field. City of Dreams managed to surge ahead in the final two furlongs and kept the lead right up to the shadow of the post. Mighty Swing who came up with a powerful run on the wide outside, gradually creeped up on the front-runner and surged ahead in the closing strides of the race. Mangalyaan had all the chances but he failed to change gears at a crucial stage of the race and had to be satisfied with the third position.

Faisal Hassan trained Khoshgel was an easy winner of the 1400 metres Byerly Brigade Cup (Div I), a Category III race. Backed spiritedly to win, Khoshgel came up with a strong effort in the straight to get the better of Ice Cave who had attempted to win, adopting runaway tactics. Ice Cave stayed on to take the second place ahead of Amazing Power. K R K Raju trained Dear Friend had been given a quiet run in his last outing and now racing in the race. Now My Dear was running in the race meant for five-year-olds and over and as such, he was well supported to put it across favourite Dolce in the lower division of the race. Dear Friend easily tackled Dolce in the final furlong and went away for an easy win. Proud Image came up with late effort but that was not good enough to get him past Dolce and he had to settle for the third place.

Ravinder Singh trained Royal Rajkumari who had given a disappointing show last time out in the hands of Gaddam, improved on that effort to win the 1200 metres Subramanya Bharati Plate (Div I), a Category III race. Despite a poor start, Royal Rajkumari was produced very wide in the home stretch and the four-year-old filly managed to get the better of front-running favourite Golden Phoenix. Brioni also finished on well to get past the longer time leader Golden Phoenix close home to get the second place. Prasad Raju trained Dorian had run below par last time out but he had as good a chance as any in the lower division of the race. Coral Springs, the favourite, had to be goaded early on to keep up with the pace. Ashwini went on a start to finish mission but weakened approaching the final furlong, giving way to Dorian who came up with a brilliant burst of speed to have the race sewn up a long way from home for his first win in the 24th start of his career. Coral Springs came up with a late rally and had to be content with the second place ahead of Dicta Royal.
