Siobhan ruthless in Sprinters Trial Stakes

  February 9 , 2018

Sulaiman Attaollahi trained Siobhan who had gone down narrowly last time out bounced back in ruthless fashion, swamping the opposition in the Gr 3 1200 metres Sprinters Trial Stakes, a terms race for four-year-olds and over, the feature event of Friday`s Bangalore races. Siobhan showed enough resolution to race up in front and then skip clear to win from relatively older opponents, more suited to longer trips.

Siobhan was strongly backed to win as she was better placed to win vis-à-vis Silver Ikon to whom she had lost conceding weight last time out. Silver Ikon was being thrown at the deep end for the first time though he had the beating of Siobhan on the last occasion. Siobhan had run below par on the last occasion but considering today`s win, her defeat must be considered as an aberration.

Suraj Narredu took Silver Ikon to the front but the front-runner did not have a free run as Siobhan was ranging on his outside putting pressure right from the start. Rounding the final turn, Silver Ikon could not quicken and was easily overhauled by Siobhan who then burst clear. The other runners who were in touch with Siobhan were stranded behind and it was left to top-weighted Baracchus who was essaying the six furlongs for the second time in his career, to come from a detached last position with a scintillating run on the wide outside to come within reach of Siobhan who had a good cushion to save her from any eventuality. Smile Stone who always makes a late rally also finished on to take the third place. Silver Ikon finished a poor fifth behind Lightning Strikes. Siobhan will now surely head for the Sprinters Cup to be held next month at Kolkata and it would be interesting if Baracchus would be confined to sprints encouraged by this effort or would opt for a furlong more in the Invitation Cup weekend as he is sure to get nominated for the sprint event after this effort.

M R Singh trained Aeisir was running after 202 days but looked spot on for the 1200 metres Karnataka Police Trophy, a race for horses rated 30 to 50. Aeisir`s last win was indicative of the fact that he belonged to better class of horses than the one he was running against. Malawi was the favourite with strong support also accruing for Aeisir. Srinath pushed Aeisir from the wide outside draw to take a handy position behind Malawi as the field set out for the six-furlong trip. Though Malawi put up a stiff resistance, Aeisir asserted his supremacy in the final furlong to win by a margin of over two lengths. Mint saved place money.

Sriram Komandur trained Diamond Rays had finished second best to highly regarded Sir Cecil in his debut run and that effort indicated that the three-year-old colt would come out of his maidens rank in his every next outing. Quoted at very cramped odds to win the 1200 metres February Plate, a race for maiden three-year-olds, Srinath had the favourite race in front and Diamond Rays easily held off the challenge of Bergamot who was hard ridden to reduce the leeway. Desperado ran on from behind to take the third position ahead of War Hero despite an unenterprising ride by his jockey.

Neil Darashah trained Dancing Dragon who was quietly fancied to win the 1400 metres Talakadu Plate (Div I), a race for horses rated 15 to 35, duly obliged, leaving favourite Deimus stranded in the final furlong to win as he pleased by a margin of over four lengths. Amazonite was third ahead of last start winner Dynamism. The lower division of the race threw a confusing scenario. On known form Shades of Desire was the best but the odds drift on her put a question mark in the minds of the punters about her prospects. There was support for Brooklyn Supreme but in the end, Striking Grey came in for one-sided support to end up as a favourite. But in the race itself, Striking Grey was not well positioned and did not give hope at any stage of the race. Shades of Desire shaped to win but closer home succumbed to Brooklyn Supreme.

Gregory Sandhu was able to bring off a well disguised gamble on Skybound in the 1200 meters Ullal Beach Plate, a race for horses in the lowest category. With apprentice jockey Md Akram declared to ride Skybound, the five-year-old was ignored in the betting ring. Galeno was the favourite but the six-year-old gelding ran a pathetic race. Bold Runner led the field into the straight but Skybound easily overhauled the front-runner in the final furlong and sped away for an easy win. Epona was third while the rest finished far behind.

The day`s opener, the 1800 metres Ghataprabha Plate, a race for horses rated 15 to 35, produced a long shot winner in Inayathulla trained Golden Success. Love Is Life, Find and Declarationoflove were the fancied runners in the fray. Extremelydangerous took over the running on turning for home and led deep into the straight. But the six-year-old mare had no answer when Golden Success came swooping on her from the third position. Golden Success surged ahead and held off the late rally of Declarationoflove. Midnight Sky edged past the long-time leader to save place money.
