Trainer Vijay Singh`s long shot, Commander (Nikhil Naidu-up), woke up from his slumber to take his 10 rivals by a complete surprise in the feature event, the 1,600m Delhi Race Club Cup Ltd, on Saturday. Vijay had a strong grip on the afternoon`s nine-event card and reeled off five wins while Naidu notched up a treble.
The nine-year-old, Commander, literally trailed the field, with Bharath Singh`s Rufus (Dashrath Singh), in the early half of the journey as Exodus and Shivalik Story made most of the running. Surprising, the tail-enders were the two who gave the galloping lessons to the rest in the field. In the same race, the 2/1 favourite, Aggregated (Hindu Singh), gave the impression that he needed the run. The western India migrant needs galloped in the mid-division, throughout and he needs to be watched out from now.
Vijay`s day had started with the victory of his three-year-old Romanoff (Nikhil) who was out-classed by The Kiss in his last outing. In the lower division of the 1,100m Kabuki Handicap, Romanoff made his own running but the fact that Naidu efforts to over-come his wide outside draw (13) and also to out-stride the opposition was a praiseworthy effort. As a result of this, the other fancied runner in the race, Jezzabelle (Dashrath), was completely found to be at the receiving-end, leaving the seasoned sprinters like Gimme Credit, Logano and Bacaardi to fight it out for the minor placings.
The 2,000m BOL publication Cup was the next event that was contested fiercely by Vijay`s pair of Yuvan (Neeraj Rawal) and Duchamp (Naidu). The former, however, scored narrowly and almost from the start, after jockey Christopher Alford lost the stirrup iron on 9/4 favourite, Seventh Step. As a result of this, the favourite went all over, including a brush with the lead.
The 8/1 shot, Multiple (Naidu), in the upper division of the 1,200m Treasure Land Handicap, was the other one who kept Vijay`s kitty swelling. Held back in third or fourth berth as Simon Templar (Dashrath), Poet (app. P. Tajeshwar) and Griffindor (app. P. Vikram) made the early running, Multiple joined the fray and managed to beat the last named horse. In the same race, trainer Vikash Jaiswal`s Kramer (P.S. Chauhan) gave a false-alarm, being the public rage at 5/4. The four-year-old was a handy third or fourth early in the race but slipped back to the rear quickly.
Vijay`s Akshya (Neeraj) brought the stable the last Hoorah as the 7/2 second favourite, had a business-like measure of the 2/1 favourite, Stunner (Chauhan) in the lower division of the Treasure Land Handicap. Akshya galloped in the mid-division while the Jaiswal`s speedy customer, Stunner, dictated the terms. However, the extra 100m weighed heavy on the favourite who may try to win yet again over the slated trip.
The Baby race, the Legal Steps Plate was claimed by trainer Bharath Singh`s Aquaracer who covered miles in the home-stretch to score in a very seasoned manner, to beat Arti Doctor`s Guitar Girl (Chouhan) in a close finish.
Bharath`s Kantai (Dashrath), early in the afternoon, had also notched up a business-like victory in the 1,400m Mossy Bear Handicap, beating Vijay`s Lancaster (Vikram).
Arti`s 3-year-old Pelion (app. R.S. Bhati) scored in the lowest class, claiming the 1,400m Aristotal Cup with ease while trainer Shaym Habbu`s newly acquired Bidstone Hill (app Sujit Paswan) scored a much needed pillar-to-post victory for his mentor who is trying make a mark in his second innings.
