With just three meetings left before the end of the 2018-2019 Hong Kong season, our correspondent looks at Star Superior, Grand Harbour, Simple Elegant, Magic Success, and Classic Unicorn as bets for the race day at Sha Tin on Sunday July 7th, 2019

Just two race meetings at Sha Tin and one at Happy Valley remain before the curtains come down on the Hong Kong 2018-2019 season. Classic Unicorn should easily claim the day`s feature race, the Members Cup which will be run as Race 8. Merrick Chung Wai Lik, a Club Member and an Owner, will officiate at the trophy presentation ceremony. Eleven races have been scheduled for the day, with the opening race starting at 12:30pm. Star Superior, Grand Harbour, Simple Elegant, and Magic Success seem to be competitive bets.

Hong Kong Jockey Club Members and their guests attending the race meeting at Sha Tin Racecourse this Sunday, 7 July, will enjoy a series of exclusive offers and gifts to mark the Club`s annual Members` Day.

Members and guests will receive a two-toned leather card holder as complimentary door gifts upon admission at Members entrances.

Our correspondent recommends the following five races as betting propositions.

Second Race - # 3 Star Superior, who has dropped down to Class 5 after his last gaining run over the straight 1000 meter dash on the Sha Tin turf track, relishes the all weather track where he has won twice before. Star Superior will be ridden by Joao Moreira for trainer Michael Chang who have combined for 4 successes from 10 starts this season. Another pointer in Star Superior`s favor is trainer Michael Chang`s success with his Trump Cards. Trainers are given the option to specify, in each race meeting, up to two of their first preference horses which should be given priority to run. Trainer Michael Chang wins disproportionately more races with his trump carded horses (nearly 45% more) and that should be another positive tick next to Star Superior. Gold Velvet and Jimson The Famous are the others who will make the finish interesting.

Fifth Race - # 7) Grand Harbour, the second of Trainer Michael Chang`s trump cards for the meeting, ran a good second in his last start. This eight year old is in great form and will benefit from the 10 pound claim that Alfred Chan will claim. Fame and Fortune has been penalized 9 rating points for his last start win over the same class, course and distance will claim 3 pounds and can run Grand Harbour close. Coolceleb did not like the extended mile trip in his last start and is back to the 1200 meter trip, over which he has had won earlier this season. With the services of jockey Zac Purton, Coolceleb has a live chance of running a good race.

Sixth Race - # 6) Simple Elegant had finished a length second behind Such a Happiness and now enjoys a five pound advantage over Such a Happiness. Simple Elegant jumps from barrier 8 (as opposed to barrier 12 in his last start) and Such a Happnisess now jumps from barrier 11 (as opposed to barrier 1 in his last start) and the weight advantage and the barrier advantage should allow Simple Elegant to register his first win in Hong Kong. These two had finished ahead of Smart Rocket who won on Wednesday night and should run the Quinella in this race. In fact, Little General and Winning Controller who also ran in the same race will likely fill the frame.

Seventh Race - # 3) Magic Success ran second in spite of showing a substantial amount of blood in his trachea in his last start. Magic Success steps up in trip from 1200 meters to1400 meter – a trip that he has won over last season. This John Moore trained gelding had won impressively in his last but one start and seemed to have plenty in hand then. Gift of Lifeline and Glittering Armour will be the other two who should figure prominently in the finish.

Eighth Race - # 13) Classic Unicorn, who won impressively in his first ever run in Hong Kong, should be able to fend off the start to finish tactics of Multimillion and these two should figure in the Quinella. Classic Unicorn is only a three year old and has maintained his winning form as evidenced by his fourth in a recent barrier trial. He may be an odds on favorite and could be combined with Multimilliuon in a Quinella for better value. Goko, Lone Eagle, and Seven Heavens should fight it out for the minor placings.
