Cavallo Veloce halts Knotty Ash`s winning run

  September 11 , 2019

Suresh trained Cavallo Veloce produced his vintage performance to halt the winning run of Knotty Ash in the Gr 3 1400 metres H H Krishnaraja Wadiyar Memorial Trophy, a terms race for four-year-olds and over, the feature event of Wednesday`s Mysore races. Knotty Ash had recorded a hat-trick of wins but the top weight that he had to carry this time out was his undoing.

Knotty Ash`s wins at Bangalore had come when he was able to go at a fast clip enjoying an uncontested lead. This time out it was not going to be easy as the others in the fray would not enjoy him to have a good break over them. Jockey John had also yp be conscious of the weight that his horse was carrying and had to conserve the horse. Knotty Ash went on a start to finish mission as is wont but good break free as Tutankhamun was shadowing him. Cavallo Veloce was settled comfortably in the third position. Rounding the final turn, Knotty Ash could not break free as Cavallo Veloce loomed large with Tutankhamun weakening. After a strong battle for supremacy, Cavallo Veloce asserted his supremacy and won with a measure of comfort. The two kg weight difference between these two made the critical difference unlike on previous occasions when Knotty Ash enjoyed a big pull in weights.

Sulaiman Attaollahi is firing duds these days after a glorious run all these years. Punjabi Girl who had won the Gr 1 Fillies Championship Stakes last year has seen a slump in her performance but her abject defeat in the 1400 metres P Shanker Memorial Plate, a race for horses rated 60 and above, came as a surprise. Quoted at cramped odds, Punjabi Girl could not get a favourable position even against modest opposition and looked a beaten horse well before the runners took the final furlong. Star of Thea in the hands of apprentice jockey Mohammed Musharraf went on a start to finish with Rafa for company. In the final furlong, Star of Thea skipped away to win with a great deal of ease by a margin of three lengths. Punjabi Girl covered ground in the stretch to finish a neck behind Rafa to save place money.

Pradeep Annaiah trained Aeisir who had let down a couple of times as a strongly fancied runner made amends in the 1200 metres H H Sri Chamaraja Wadiyar Memorial Trophy, a race for horses rated 60 and above. Favourite Master of Universe was given too much to do in the stretch and the favourite could only rally late and snatch the second spot in a close finish from Areca Legend and Courage.

Master of Universe who had run game races at Mumbai and at Hyderabad during the Invitation Cup weekend races was backed to the exclusion of the rest with the other runners in the fray were available at nourishing odds. The normally fast Master of Universe was settled in the rear group by jockey Srinath as Areca Legend did the front running. Areca Legend led the field into the final furlong at which point Courage joined issue. Aeisir moved with raking strides from behind and covered the leeway briskly in the hands of R N Darshan and shot ahead close home to clinch the issue. Master of Universe who had many lengths to make up chased Aeisir to grab the second position in a tight finish.

Vishal Yadav trained Nikka went on a start to finish mission in the 1200 metres J H Foley Memorial Trophy (Div I), a race for horses rated 40 to 65 and managed to win despite cutting an erratic course and running on the widest part of the track in the end. In doing so, Nikka affected the progress of Mint Money who too had to change course as a result of the interference and ended up third. Lord Iisley finished a close second. There was an objection against the jockey of Nikka by the rider of Mint for interference and the same was upheld. Nikka was relegated to the third position. Lord Iisley got the race by default. Favourite Super Success ran without hope. The lower division of the race saw Ganapathy trained Turf Magic justified favouritism getting the better of Tzar in the final furlong for a comfortable win. Turf Magic was thus winning after a gap of 726 days. Spirit of London rallied well in the final stages of the race to edge past Tzar to get the runner-up berth.

Arjun Mangalorkar trained Streaming Gold was widely expected to have a bold show in the 1800 metres Kumaradhara Plate, a race for horses rated 20 to 45. Jockey John had to fully exert himself on the progeny of Multidimensional to contain the late flourish of Dreams United to win the race by a whisker. Track Striker was third.

The heavily backed Star Binder from the stables of jockey Rakesh duly obliged in the 1400 metres Eclipse Plate, a race for horses in the lowest category without coming under pressure. Even Money finished second ahead of Safe Bet.

Santosh Rao trained Perfect Legacy made amends for the last start failure in the 1200 metres Paddock Plate, a race for horses rated 20 to 45. Backed as if his defeat was out of the question, John had Perfect Legacy track Warlock into the straight before asking for an effort from the favourite. Perfect Legacy unleashed a powerful run which saw the favourite establish a big lead by the final furlong to win after a wit of 459 days. Perfect Legacy won pulling up from Ascendency and Celtic Mist.
