Leo D`Silva trained Corfe Castle who had last year won the Gr 3 Kakatiya Cup, a terms race for four-year-olds and over, repeated the feat on Monday with a smashing win at Malakpet on Monday. The speedy son of Excellent Art did not meet with any strong opposition as he bounced clear on the wide outside to win as he pleased in the hands of jockey David Allan.
Though Corfe Castle was running after 162 days, he was expected to assert his supremacy as he not only remains the best sprinter at this centre, the terms of the race too were loaded in his favour. The bookmakers were not willing to offer any price that punters could profit from. Agni led the field from the start with David Allan settling Corfe Castle in the rear. David Allan wasted no time at the final turn as he quickly moved up on the favourite to measure the opponents inside the final 300 metres and went storming clear to win by a widening margin of three lengths over Ace Ace Ace. Agni was third.
Satheesh trained Prince Caspian who hadn`t won for 777 days brought off an upset in the 1200 metres R Raghupathi Reddy Memorial Trophy, a race for horses rated 40 to 65, with a last stride win over favourite Sitara. Sequeira trained Sitara was backed to the exclusion of the rest. Akshay Kumar had no hesitation in taking the favourite to the front who called the shots and had a good lead going into the final furlong. Closer home, a bunch of runners were closing. Prince Caspian who flew home on the wide outside managed to put his neck in front at the post. Sporting Smile and Private Empire occupied the next slots on the frame, a neck each separating them from the runner-up.
Ashhad Asbar rode the winners of both the divisions of 1200 metres Rocky Plate, a race for maiden three-year-olds. Laxman Singh trained Brilliant View justified the strong favouritism winning the Division I of the race taking control of the race in the stretch and storming clear to win by a margin of three lengths. Royal Romance ran on to take the second position ahead of Look of Love who rallied well towards the closing stages of the race to grab the third position. Mirana won the lower division of the race as a long shot. Even as Beauty On Parade, Bell Springs and Fashion Universe were disputing the issue, Mirana found her bearings in the final 100 metres and flew home to snatch the issue from favourite Belle Springs. Beauty On Parade held off Fashion Universe to get the third position.
Lesser fancied runner from the stables of Leo D`Silva Alliston warmed up in the final furlong and overhauled the long-time leader Rutilant to land the spoils in the 1400 metres Chowmahalla Plate (Div I), a race for horses rated 20 to 45. Rutilant who was strongly favoured in the betting ring weakened close to home and Vashishta rallied late to push the favourite to the third position. Vittal Deshmukh trained Barbosella brought off a long-priced win in the lower division of the race. Jockey Ajeeth Kumar angled out Barbosella from the rails inside the final furlong and the lesser fancied runner easily tackled the front-running Spiritual and stormed ahead for a comfortable win. Favourite The Special One ran on late to take the second position ahead of Promiseofhappiness who edged out Spiritual to save place money.
The first race of the day, the 1200 metres Best of Fun Plate (Div II), a race for horses rated 0 to 25, did not end up enjoyable as the overwhelming favourite Dumbledore failed to oblige after pacing with Smarty into the straight. The favourite disappeared from the sight in the stretch as Smarty spurted clear to win from late rallying Withrosemakeup. Golden Adara nosed out Bombastic for the third position and the horse had to survive an objection for interference to retain the third position. The upper-division of the race was won by lesser fancied Negress Princess who in he hands of apprentice jockey Afroz Khan held off the late rally of All Star General to land the spoils. Vijay`s empress finished with a big effort to finish a close third.
