Kariega clinches a thriller in Ebco Livsmart Million

By: Frankel   February 1 , 2020

Vishal Gaikwad trained Kariega pulled off a thrilling win over Rainbow Trout in the 1400 metres Ebco Livsmart Million, a race for horses rated 60 to 86, the feature event of Saturday`s evening races held at Mahalakshmi. The lesser fancied runner built on an impressive run in the Indian 1000 Guineas to snatch the verdict literally in the last stride of the race.

Pesi Shroff trained Valegro was the strong favourite to win but the favourite disappointed finishing a tame third. These days horses from the stables of the champion trainer are not performing to expectations and something has obviously gone wrong. Given the fact that Pesi is a shrewd customer, he is bound to sort things out and bounce back. Pesi has the armoury and he has never been short in terms of the number of races that he wins each season. At the moment his horses are failing to perform as expected in the bigger races. After Bangalore challenger Star Appearance led into the straight and weakened, bottom-weighted Rainbow Trout sneaked ahead and shaped to win. Majestic Warrior threatened briefly before losing steam. Kariega who was a few lengths adrift responded well to the urgings of apprentice jockey Nazil and managed to nail the front-runner on the post. Valegro who did not raise a fluent gallop ran on to take the third position. Malwa and Star Appearance ran way below par.

Dallas Todywalla trained Sky Fall who looked the best among the horses in the fray in the light of a forward run in tough company obliged in the 1000 metres Pelican Million, a race for maiden three-year-olds. Jockey David Egan had Sky Fall lead the way and the progeny of Leitir Mor held off a big late rally by Market King by a fast diminishing margin of a neck. Endeavour looked the only threat for Sky Fall till the final furlong but he failed to accelerate in the manner expected and failed to make a mark on the eventual winner. Market King finished with a big rush only to miss the berth by a neck. This run should hold the Shiraz Sunderji horse in good stead and he should make amends next time out unless of course, the gelding runs into somebody who is of superior class.

Jockey Sandesh who is inching closer to the landmark of riding 1000 winners in his career had a back to back double which meant that he is one short of the magical figure. He drove out the well-fancied Golden Era to stave off the challenge of favourite Eagleinthesky to win the 2400 metres Mahalakshmi Million, a race for horses rated 40 to 66. Irish jockey Chris Hayes who had been specially flown down to ride Armaity in the Indian Derby had Eagleinthesky take charge early in the straight. Golden Era who was tracking the favourite all the way effectively tackled the front-runner and stretched clear in the final stages of the race. Gdansk managed to nose out Moriseiki to grab the third position.

Sandesh had an arm-chair ride to victory on the well-backed Tasman in the 1800 metres Kingfisher Max Million, a race for horses in the lowest category. Sandesh eased Tasman in about the fourth or fifth position till turning for home before pulling out the favourite on the wide outside. Tasman cruised past those in front to win by a widening margin of six lengths over Sweeping Move who in turn was another five lengths ahead of Big Ben. The fancied Tenacious lost ground at the start and was never in the hunt.

A quiet touch was brought off on Shiraz Sunderji trained Bait And Watch in the1600 metres Gateway of India Million, a race for horses rated 20 to 46. Jockey Trevor Patel rode a waiting race on the lesser fancied runner who was brought into contention on the wide outside inside the final 300 metres. Bait And Watch covered the leeway in the manner of a higher class horse as he bounced clear in the final furlong to win as he pleased. It`s A Deal kept the second position from Lion King and One For The Glory in a cluster finish.

Long shot Odessa from the stables of trainer Malesh Narredu pulled off an upset win in the 1200 metres Turf Authorities of India Million, a race for horses rated 20 to 46. Odessa bounced clear in the final furlong to win by a margin of five lengths to win against the run of expectations. Another long shot Shivalik Queen nosed out Jetfire to get the runner-up berth. The heavily supported Run Forest Run showed up briefly in the stretch before fading out of contention. Odessa was winning a race after a long wait of 777 days.

David Egan`s strong riding on lesser fancied Golden Seal ensured a narrow win for this lesser fancied runner from the stables of trainer Dallas Todywalla in the Kingfisher Ultra Sundowner Million, a race for horses in the lowest category. Golden Seal had the lead going into the final furlong and the front-runner held on to win by a neck under a relentless pressure applied by favourite Mikayla`s Pride. Princess Scarlet flew home to be an impressive third.
