Smashing Blue continues to dominate

By: Tippu Sultan   February 9 , 2020

Hilton Sequeira trained Smashing Blue had yet another winning outing in the 1200 metres Gr 3 Darley Arabian Million, a terms race for three-year-olds, the feature event of Sunday`s Hyderabad races. Easily one of the best three-year-olds at this centre, Smashing Blue provided jockey David Allan who replaced the injured Akshay Kumar with an arm-chair ride to victory, having the race in control right from the word `go`, winning without having to be extended. This was the fourth straight win for Smashing Blue.

Despite having achieved a hat-trick of wins, Smashing Blue was running without any penalty as per the terms of the race and as such, she was quoted at very cramped odds to extend her winning streak. Smashing Blue had plenty of speed to go to the front without having to be pushed to take charge and the progeny of Win Legend raced without anyone bothering her and checked in by over two lengths. Bedford ran on to take the second position ahead of Exponent.

In an exciting finish, Bisate nosed out Mark My Day to win the 1400 metres Kasu Brahmananda Reddy Memorial Trophy (Div I), a race for maiden three-year-olds. Long shot Mark My Day appeared to have the race well sewn up as he had a useful lead going into the final furlong but Bisate produced a tremendous turn of foot in the closing stages of the race in the hands of jockey Ashhad Asbar to nail the front-runner in the closing stride of the race. Favourite Queen Daenerys also finished with a rush but could only finish a close third. The short-priced favourite from trainer Srinivas Reddy`s stables, Ashwa Bravo had no problem in trouncing the opposition in the lower division of the race. Ashwa Bravo hit the front inside the final 300 metres and came all alone in front. Amyra was second more than five lengths adrift with NRI Touch managing to snatch the third place from Khalasar five lengths behind the runner-up.

In what turned out to be an absorbing finish, a cluster of horses charged home in the closing stages of the 1400 metres Pochampally Cup (Div I), a race for horses rated 40 to 65 with the powerfully ridden Dandy Man finally finding the winning post ahead of the rest after a gap of 356 days. Favourite Balius led all the way but in the closing strides of the race was pressed by a host of horses with Dandy Man managing to head home in the hands of jockey Suraj Narredu. Destine Dynamite too finished with a rush and managed to push Balius to the third slot. Top Contender and NRI Heights too were in the cluster. Laxman Singh Siyabonga had it easy in the Division II of the race, winning start to finish without coming under pressure in the hands of jockey Ashhad Asbar. The odds on Siyabonga drifted out close to race time with NRI Vision coming in for sustained support but the former had the race firmly in control when the latter rallied late.

Leo D`Silva trained Somerset brought off a big upset in the 1800 metres Hyderabad City Police Commissioner`s Trophy (Div I), a race for horses rated 20 to 46, winning after a longish wait of 384 days. Stablemate of Somerset Diesis Dream ran freely in front and had the lead going into the final furlong but the former who warmed up to the task in the final furlong came from way off the pace and stormed ahead in the final 100 metres to win with a measure of comfort. Ajmal Birju too came up late on the scene to snatch the second spot from the long-time leader Diesis Dream. Favourite Rutilant was nowhere in sight and was a tame fourth. Srinivas Reddy trained Mahashakti proved too good in the lower division of the race bursting clear in the final furlong for a comfortable win over Glendale in the hands of jockey Ashhad Asbar. Glendale was a nose ahead of Ice Warrior who in turn was a short head in front of favourite Minnelli.

Jockey Mukesh Kumar drove out favourite Exclusive Art to a facile start to finish win in the 1200 metres Himalaya Plate, a race for horses rated 20 to 45. Blazing Speed who chased the front-runner found the favourite too good for comfort and had to struggle in the end to retain the runner-up spot from Original Temptress.
