Northern Alliance bounces back with emphatic win

  November 14 , 2020

Neil Devaney trained Northern Alliance bounced back to score an emphatic win over favourite Anjeze in the 1400 metres Karnataka Police Trophy, a race for horses rated 60 and above, the feature event of Saturday`s Bangalore races. Northern Alliance whose last win in the Mysore 2000 Guineas last year had been campaigned unsuccessfully in the classics found his bearings the moment he was switched back to a handicap event.

Trainer Sulaiman Attaollahi had many fancied runners in the eight-event card and three of them flopped. Anjeze who had been campaigned over longer trips was widely expected to win the feature event going by the support in the betting circles. Trevor Patel had Anjeze in the mid group while the less-heralded Prabhakar had Northern Alliance in the rear bunch. After Depth Charge set a fast pace and weakened going into the final furlong, Manchester held sway for a while before Anjeze surged ahead. However, the favourite could not find an extra gear when Northern Alliance came home with a powerful burst of speed. The latter flew past the favourite to record an impressive win. Manchester stayed on to take the third position.

Lagarde had made a smashing debut last winter season and thereafter was not seen in action. There was a great deal of expectation on the basis of the debut run. The three-year-old Kingda Ka colt was backed to the exclusion of the rest in the 1400 metres Royal Calcutta Turf Club Cup, a terms race for three-year-olds. Lagarde had also shown out in a mock race which further confirmed the belief that the favourite could turn out to be something special. However, Lagarde disappointed finishing down the field in the fourth position while the race was hotly contested by three horses. Arjun Mangalorkar trained Miss Pareil who raced last in the early part of the race was angled out in the final furlong by jockey Neeraj Rawal to come into contention with the front-running Watchmystars. Ansaldo too joined the fray close home but Miss Pareil proved superior of the three winning by half a length over Watchmystars who held off Ansaldo by a neck. Lagarde reportedly came back sore and one is not sure whether the horse had any issue. The veterinary report should make things clear. Watchmystars and Ansaldo should make amends before long.

Padmanabhan trained Sovereign Legend made an impressive debut in the 1600 metres Master Key Plate, a race for horses rated 15 to 35. The horses in the fray though were all pretty modest with Padmanabhan`s Drusilla who had the benefit of a race run enjoying favouritism. Drusilla had all the chances when she came into strong contention in the final furlong but packed up under pressure and reportedly burst her blood vessels. Sovereign Legend who was loitering in the rear end of the field, found spaces along the rails, moved with big rides and though not given a punishing ride, flew home to win by a margin of two lengths over Arabian Mist to provide jockey Mark with a rare double.

A bunch of decent horses figured at the finish in the 1400 metres Children`s Day Plate, a race for maiden three-year-olds. Pissaro who has enjoyed great hype was the favourite but the colt once again disappointed. It is possible that he is grossly overrated unless he bounces back and disproves his critics. Arjun Mangalorkar trained Hope Island who is bred as a full brother to the well-performed Big Sur seized the initiative close home to land the spoils from the late-rallying Lake Tahoe who warmed up late to the task apart from being disadvantaged by a poor start at the jump out. Mystic Eye who ran too freely in front is another for the notebook along with Twinkle Feet who was given a soft ride.

Arjun Mangalorkar trained Paparazzi was expected to record an encore in the 1400 metres Red Baron Plate, a race for horses rated 30 to 50. Paparazzi was knocked out at the start because of the interference caused by The Corporal but even without the interference, it is doubtful whether she would have justified the favouritism. Suraj Narredu who kept Hokkaido second behind Wings of Desire took charge inside the final 350 metres and stormed clear to win by a widening margin of nine lengths over late rallying Venus Bay and Paparazzi, both of whom suffered interference at the start. Zervan who rode The Corporal has been fined Rs 5000 for causing interference to Paparazzi.

The run benefit came to the rescue of Dominic trained Songkran who managed to nail Amazonite on the post in the 1200 metres Chintamani Plate (Div I), a race for horses rated 15 to 35. Favourite Dragon Mountain stayed in contention till the final furlong before petering out. Amazonite who led the charge inside the final 300 metres slackened in the final moments of the race which enabled a strongly driven Songkran to snatch the verdict. Estella held off Paradiso to save place money. Alexander Dumas dropped its jockey R Ravi at the start. Rajesh Narredu trained Splash produced a strong effort in the final furlong to floor the heavily supported Torosanto who had received inspired support in the betting channels. Legendary Princess had the first run on her opponents going into the final furlong. Torosanto rallied along the rails to join the issue with the front runner. Once Splash found her bearings, she covered ground rapidly and bounced clear close home to win with a great deal of ease. Torosanto nosed out Legendary Princess to keep the runner-up berth.

Padmanabhan trained Mrs Thatcher rallied well to get the better of the well-backed Perfectgoldenera in the closing strides of the race to win the 1400 metres BARI Plate, a race for horses in the lowest category. Perfectgoldenera shaped to win when she broke into a sizeable lead in the final furlong but was found wanting when Mrs Thatcher made a good rally in the hands of jockey Mark. Mrs Thacher has had her share of problems and she was reported to be lame after the race. Fierce Fight who had a forward run stayed on to take the third position.
