Karthik Ganapathy trained Amare made an impressive debut in the 1200 metres Gr 3 Gool S Poonawalla Million, a terms race for three-year-olds, the feature event of Sunday`s Mumbai races. The got abroad colt Amare came from way off the pace and swamped the opposition in the manner of a top-quality youngster. Pesi Shroff trained Miracle was another youngster of potential to win in style. Veteran jockey Pradeep Chouhan had a field day booting home four winners.
Fast Rain and Multiencrypted who had the benefit of good forward runs were considered to have the best credentials to win the race. Both these horses perhaps were too fit for the race they ran in that they did not show any improvement. In such a scenario, it is the debutants whose potential is unknown who profit. After travelling the first furlong, Multiencrypted took over the running and set a brisk pace before weakening approaching the final furlong. The progeny of Ruler of the World, Amare who was in the penultimate position at the final bend, produced a brilliant burst of speed in the manner of a highly promising youngster and had the race sewn up a long way from home in the hands of jockey Bhawani Singh. Flying Scotsman was putting good work towards the close when finishing a suggestive second ahead of favourite Fast Man. The pace-setting Multiencrypted weakened to finish fourth.
Pesi Shroff trained Miracle was another horse to show out in the course of the day`s action. The daughter of Multidimensional showed good maturity when racing like a seasoned horse and with an eye-catching amazing turn of foot won the 1400 metres Pleasure Hunt Plate, a race for maiden three-year-olds, in splendid fashion. Arc De Triomphe was a faraway second ahead of Supreme Runner while the money on favourite Nishk appeared to be ill-directed.
Adhiraj Singh Jodha had three of the four runners in the fray for the 2400 metres General Obaidullah Khan Trophy, a race for horses rated 60 to 85. The only horse belonging to another stable was Imtiaz Sait trained Gloriosus who had no recent form to go by. In the event, last start winner Golden Era who chased Gloriosus till the final turn, stormed clear to win by a widening margin of six lengths. Both Square Moon and In It To Win It finished way down the field in the third and fourth position. The dearth of horses for long distances races is truly appalling as we see week after week the same set of horses running.
Malesh Narredu trained Leopard Rock who had found the company in the Guineas too tough to handle was brought back to the six-furlong trip in the 1200 metres Colombiana Plate, a race for horses rated 40 to 66. Leopard Rock immediately resumed his winning ways, recording his third success of the season, staving off the spirited bid of Red Carnation with a measure of comfort. Epiphany ran on to take the third spot ahead of last start winner Agrami.
The biggest disappointment of the day came in the 1200 metres Warsaw Pact Plate, a race for horses rated 20 to 46 where the overwhelming favourite El Capitan failed to deliver the goods, surrendering tamely to the challenge of Pesi Shroff trained Cost Rica. The horses which had run behind El Capitan had subsequently gone on to win, flanking the form of El Capitan. However, the favourite ran below expectations. Costa Rica shook off the favourite in the closing stages of the race to record an easy win. Pense`s was third while Endeavour who came in for big support in the did not justify the spirited support.
Shamshir Sword from the stables of Pesi Shroff had the best credentials to win the 1400 metres Bourbon King Plate (Div I), a race for horses rated 20 to 46. The favourite provided an easy win for jockey Chouhan, easily accounting for the challenge of Rays of Sun. Gilt Edge nosed out Ron to save place money. The lower division of the race saw favourite Tomorrows Dreams run way below par while finishing a disappointing fifth. Beejay prevailed in a tight finish over Vincenzo and Exotique.
The change of name perhaps did the trick for Lagertha (Late Mikayla`s Pride) who had found one better on three occasions and had remained a maiden in eight runs. Backed confidently to make amends, Lagertha shot ahead inside the final furlong and this time managed to survive by the skin of her teeth to win the 1200 metres Perceived Value Plate (Div I), a race for lowest rated horses, from the late rallying Sachertorte. Grand Sinatra was third. The lower division of the race saw the well-backed Gold Crest from the stables of trainer Sangram N Joshi recorded an easy win over Saltbae who managed to neck out the long-time leader Tristar to pinch the runner-up berth.
