Merchantofvenice shocks in Fourth Estate Trophy

By: Frankel   October 8 , 2016

B Prakash trained Merchantofvenice produced a powerful burst of speed down the homestretch to down the colours of favourite Intelligence to bring off a big upset in the 1400 metres Fourth Estate Trophy, a race for horses rated 80 and above, the feature event of Saturday`s long card of 10 events. With quite a few long shots losing the roost, winner-picking was a tricky proposition.

Intelligence had recorded an impressive win last time out. The quality of that win encouraged many to believe that the daughter of Rip Van Winkle was capable of an encore as the others in the fray did not have encouraging form. Merchantofvenice had often proved to be a long shot but his performance had been over shorter trips. As such, his chances over seven furlongs were not considered too good. Trevor Patel, as usual, had Intelligence lead all the way and enjoyed a healthy lead. Merchantofvenice who was loitering at the wrong end of the field, warmed up to the task very well in the straight and came home with a big effort which floored the favourite who was unable to change gears as it were. Merchantofvenice easily overhauled the front-runner inside the final 100 metres as the favourite began to send distress signal. Remember Me ran on to neck out Staristocrat to get the third place.

Faisal Abbas trained Jeannine was backed to win the 1600 metres Pegasus Trophy, a race for horses rated 40 to 66, with the degree of confidence that was also reflected in the performance of the horse. Jockey C S Jodha had Jeannie tracking Caesars Star into the straight before asking the fancied runner to quicken. The four-year-old filly quickened well and went storming clear to win by a widening margin of four lengths over Traherne who was the best of the beaten brigade. Few Dollars More ran on to finish third ahead of long-time leader Caesars Star.

Malesh Narredu trained London had no problem in winning the 1400 metres Sardar S S Gadhoke Gold Trophy, a race for horses rated 40 to 66, except for the fact that while overhauling the front-running Stand And Dance, the favourite went on to the latter and even slightly bumped the lesser fancied runner. London was however traveling the best of the lot and the resultant objection for interference was overruled as the slight skirmish made no material difference to the outcome of the race. Pink Panther who did all the front-running till overtaken in the final furlong held off Pugnacious by a neck to get the third place.

Full-brother to classic winning Wind Stream, Irises made an impressive debut in the E d`Avoine Trophy (Div I), a race for maiden three-year-olds. Jockey Kavraj Singh had Irises lead all the way and the progeny of Multidimensional had no problem in keeping her rivals at bay. Star Comrade was a well beaten second ahead of Drogo. Normandy failed to such improvement over his previous run and was a disappointing fourth. Santosh drove out Nazak Chenoy trained Lucas to a start to finish win in the lower division of the race. The winner was available at big odds. The well backed Honey Dew gave a strong chase but found the front-runner slip away from her reach. Odessa made a late rally but he had too much ground to cover and ended up a tame third.

Rehanullah Khan trained Queen Credible came in for big support in the 1200 metres Pune Racing Journalists Trophy (Div I), a race for horses rated 20 to 46. However, Queen Credible did not show the speed to occupy a forward position early on. Though she looked like overhauling the well backed Cicitalia in the final furlong, the latter skipped away to record a comfortable win. There was a cluster finish behind with Lord Arazan, Pierce Arrow pushing Queen Credible to the fourth place by very short margins. Mansoor Shah trained Espada chased Carralisa into the straight before sailing clear to win the lower division of the race by a handsome margin. Carralisa held on to the second position to finish ahead of Pristina.

B Prakash trained Sanam proved too good for the opposition in the 2000 metres Aquamarine Plate, a race for horses in the lowest category. Sanam left the field stranded at the top of the straight to win by a widening margin of seven lengths over Daiblo and Argonautica.

Padmakosa bounced back to win after 377 days when the Subhag Singh trainee travelled in a handy position till the top of the straight before pouncing on the front-running Moondrops and then storming ahead to win comfortably from Secaucus and Generous Lady, the D N Zodge Plate (Div I), a race for horses rated 1 to 26. Rising Concert produced a winning gallop in the final furlong to edge past Rachel to win the lower division of the race in a close finish. Isinit and Starry Image too ran on strongly in the end. There were three objections, all against Rachel for interference, caused in the early part of the race. All the objections were overruled. Isinit who was slightly hampered at the start, travelled wide and finished on the outer rail. If she had kept a straight course, she could have troubled the winner.
