Changed riding tactics wins Whomakestherules the Guineas

By: Goldie Boy   December 3 , 2016

Trainer Malesh Narredu`s colt, Whomakestherules (Suraj Narredu-up) scored a decisive victory in the Calcutta 2000 Guineas, on Saturday. Changed riding tactics, turned the tables on the hot favourite, Accolade (Trevor Patel), his erstwhile easy conqueror, in the Deccan Colts Stakes (Hyderabad). Rated as an underdog, in the re-match with trainer Pesi Shroff`s hot-property, Accolade (Trevor Patel), the winner, the Multidimensional son, always had an upper hand over the field, no sooner the starter flagged off the seven-horse field. Leading by about two lengths from the start, Whomakestherules` efforts never slackened in the final furlong as the 9/20 hot-favourite stepped up the chase; which only made the winner stretch further to maintain the winning tempo. Trainer Vijay Singh`s Ballister was best of the rest, albeit a distance behind.

Favourites, in any case, had a bad day in the office as six of the seven public choices failed to deliver the goods. Trainer Arti Doctor`s Arabian Sky (Neeraj Rawal) was the only one who obliged at tolerably decent odds of 16/10 in the lower division of the BOL Publication Cup. The upper division of the race witnessed the western India contingent in total command with the two Lagads – Narendra and Vinay -- calling the shots from the start of the race. However, in the end, it was the lesser fancied of junior Lagad who had the say in the last furlong when his five-year-old horse, Million Falcon (apprentice N. B. Kuldeep) downed a much younger speedster, Flight Of Phoenix (Nirmal Jodha).

Neeraj, who is having a purple patch, also had an armchair ride of trainer Raunak Banerji`s Bindass in the 2,000m M.B. Medhora Cup. The winner chased Malesh`s Jordana (apprentice Jaykumar) till the final turn and took off for a runaway victory. In the same race, Vijay`s heavily fancied Majestic (Suraj) found the going tough and off the board, though her last run was very promising.

Vijay`s other runners, too, performed pathetically in their respective events, most of which were easy pick for his bother, Bharath Singh. In the 2,000m Burdwan Memorial Cup, Vijay`s Adrestia (Neeraj) was no match for Bharath`s top-weighted runner, Triumphus (C. Alford). The later, in his usual late gallop, covered a lot of ground in the stretch run to easily beat the front-running Adrestia.

In the baby race, the 1,100m C.M. Varma Memorial Cup, too, Vijay`s pair of Ashaya (Neeraj) and Alamire (Alford) found a stronger contestant in Bharath Sangfroid (Trevor) who made his own running and lasted out to score over the Bindass` connections.

The afternoon concluded with Bharath`s ward Leopard Creek (Dashrath); also following the day`s trend while Vijay being on the receiving end. Dashrath allowed Vikash Jaiswal`s Sergeant Major to dictate the terms till about a furlong from home before pouncing on the long time leader for a cruising victory over Vijay`s Half Volley (Neeraj).
