Ship Rock outsmarts the opposition in the feature

By: Goldie Boy   December 13 , 2016

Trainer Shyam Habbu`s colt Ship Rock (Christopher Alford-up) scored an authoritative victory in 1,600m the P.P. Ginwala (Jr.) Memorial Cup, the feature event in Tuesday`s card. The 7/s shot made his own running to defy the statutory penalty slapped for his recent victory. The victory also indicated that he could score again, if not treated harshly by the handicapper. Alford went on to guide trainer James Mckeown`s 9/2 fancied runner, I Told You Know, to victory in the Supreme Princess Handicap. The afternoon had a fare share of long knives as Cadman (Neeraj Rawal) was the only clear favourite who delivered the goods in the eight-event card.

The long priced winners have been ruling the roost, thanks to the fact that the western India`s visiting contingent has given a new dimension to the city racing. The better class of the western India horses can not be denied but most of them have been disappointing here for one reason or the other. As a result of this the task of spotting winners has become that more difficult. Now that things are beginning to fall in place, the protesting local horseowning brigade is also loving it as odds offered in the betting make most races an open affair.

Cadman in the 2,000m Saddle Up Handicap, for instance, was backed down from 13/4 to 2/1, and rightly so, inspite of the presence of the western India`s well-performed invader, Square Moon (apprentice Hindu Singh), shouldering the top-weight of 61-/12kg. Cadman, on the other hand, carried 50kg. However, he had placed fair fourth in the monsoon Derby, and presently enjoyed all round pull at the weights. The Dancing forever son duly obliged after chasing the long time leader, Sushi (Madassar Nazar) and Sunset Sail (S. Zervan).

The expanding odds of I Told You Know, in the 2,000m Supreme Princess Handicap, did not deter backers as money came heavily on trainer Raunak Banerji`s Queen`s Command (Ashhad Asbar) who was an impressive second in his previous outing, albeit in the lowest class, and that to, behind, Romantic Society. The end-result was I Told You Know winning the race in a tight finish from Bharath Singh`s ward, Lochnivar (Dashrath) and not Queen`s Command. The Whatsascript colt won almost from the start.

Trainer Narendra Lagad was the lone visiting trainer who could deliver the goods when his failed-favourite, Australian Agatta (Dashrath Singh), won the 1,200m Arterial Handicap. The horse, in fact, followed the tested formula -- of start-to-finish -- to success.

Raunak`s Modification (Asbar) performed creditably in the 1,400m Silver Print Handicap; which the three-year-old filly won easily from Arti Doctor`s Heliconia (apprentice Ranidan Singh). The Rebuttal filly was ridden well in check till turning for home and was a fluent winner.

Arti`s Shy Belle (Zervan), too, was ridden in an identical manner to victory in the lower division of the Allodium Handicap; which the Diffident daughter won from trainer Vikash Jaiswal`s fancied runner, My Lady Luck. It was My Lady Luck who made all the running but the leader was taken by a complete surprise by the 6/1 chance in the final 100m of the race.

The lower division of the Allodium Handicap was claimed by trainer Dipak Karki`s long shot, Footloose (apprentice Ranidan) who made all the running and lasted out to beat Bharath`s Spyglass Hill (Md Islam).

Bharath`s Super Striker (Nikhil Naidu) was the other rank-outsider who succeeded in his pillar-to-post tactics as he got the better of trainer Javed Khan`s fancied runner Xperience (Nirmal Jodha) in the Succeeding Start Handicap.
