Queen of the Stars makes it in feature event

By: Tippu Sultan   December 18 , 2016

Leo D`Silva trained Queen of the Stars asserted her supremacy over favourite Baashagar close home to win the1400 metres Ch Satyanarayana Rao of Itkyal Memorial Cup, a race for horses rated 66 to 90, the feature event of Sunday`s races held at Malakpet. Queen of the Stars who is in good nick this season engaged the front-running Baashagar in a battle for supremacy and emerged victorious with a fair margin in the end.

Baashagar was widely expected to have a decisive say as the five-year-old had the benefit of a forward run to his credit. Apprentice jockey B R Kumar who was been doing well during the season, had Baashagar lead from the start with Queen of the Stars tucked in along the rails in second or third position till turning for home. Baashagar took the turn wide at the final bend but soon rolled back to the rails. Baashagar enjoyed the lead till Queen of the Stars was set alight by Kuldeep Singh. Queen of the Stars picked up steam in the final furlong and got the better of front-runner inside the final 100 metres and was getting stronger at the finish. Morning Miracle was in third position without disturbing the frenetic action in front.

Leo had another winner through Par Excellence in the 1100 metres Treasure Leaf Plate, a race for horses rated 46 to 70. Par Excellence graced the wrong end of the field till entering the straight. Favourite Symbol of Pride who was well positioned appeared to be on course for a win when Par Excellence moved with strong strides in the hands of apprentice jockey Md Ismail and managed to clinch a short-head verdict in the end. Kohinoor Grace was third ahead of Egyptian Wind.

Vittal Deshmukh trained Torremolinos pulled off a thrilling win over late rallying Grand Canyon in the 1400 metres Malakpet Cup, a race for horses rated 46 to 70. Exclusive Beauty led from the start and had the lead going into the final furlong. Torremolinos at this point of time began to pick up steam and produced a powerful effort to overhaul the front-runner. Torremolinos, however, had to survive a scare as Grand Canyon flashed onto the scene only to miss the berth by the proverbial whisker. Khoshgel made a good rally along the rails but had to settle for the third place.

With the benefit of two race runs, two-year-old Vancouver from trainer Netto`s stables had no problem in winning the 1100 metres Grand Parade Plate. Vancouver was pushed to take over the running from the start and the favourite enjoyed a healthy lead all through to check in by a margin of four lengths over Apowerx who in turn was another four lengths ahead of Jumeira Express.

Laxman Singh trained Vijay`s Empire claimed the 2400 metres Palampet Cup, a race for horses rated 26 to 50, confidently staving off the challenge of Coruba. After stablemate Time To Climb expended his energy with a runaway lead, Vijay`s Empire who raced in second position, was ready to take charge by the time the runners took the final bend. Vijay`s Empire was ahead inside the final two furlongs and though he was pressed by Coruba, he had enough reserves to pull away for an easy win. Bullish Approach perhaps relished the extended trip while finishing third.

Favourite Vijay Vidyut from trainer Vittal Deshmukh`s stable readily obliged in the 1600 metres Meghalaya Plate, a race for horses rated26 to 50. Jockey Akshay Kumar relaxed the favourite in the rear group as Buckshee led the field into the straight before fading out. Naamdhari then showed up but could not sustain his foray in front when Vijay Vidyut essayed his challenge. The latter overhauled the front-runner in a matter of few strides and stretched away for a facile win. Proud Image came from a long way back to take the third place.
