Cameron wins by declining authority

By: Stay Thirsty   December 21 , 2016

Suleiman Attaollahi trained Cameron won the 2000 metres Chamundi Hills Cup, a terms race for three-year-olds and over, the feature event of Wednesday`s Mysore races by declining superiority over Let The Lion Roar. Cameron was widely expected to have things easy but the progeny of Admiralofthefleet had to be fully driven out to contain the strong challenge from Let The Lion Roar to prevail by a neck thanks to the persevering efforts of jockey Trevor Patel.
Cameron was considered unbeatable in the small field that was in the fray. Ancient Title who had surprised everyone by runaway tactics and winning this event last year against the run of expectations, did the job of a pace-setter followed by Cameron, Let The Lion Roar, Storming Home and New World.

Rounding the final turn, Cameron took over the running and was strongly pressed by Let The Lion Roar who put up a dogged fight. Cameron, however, managed to carry the lead to the winning post by a fast diminishing margin of a neck. Ancient Title stayed on to take the third place.

B K Narendra trained Class Is Class brought off a big upset in the 1600 metres Dr M N Doreswamy Memorial Trophy, a race for horses rated 60 and above. Class Is Class responded well to the urgings of apprentice jockey R Ajay Kumar and managed to get the better of On Time in the dying moments of the race to the land the spoils at big odds. There was a tight finish with four horses finishing within striking range of each other. On Time was second ahead of last start winner Momotaro and Kaguya Himei who had the initiative going into the final furlong.

Apprentice Ajay Kumar was also successful astride Skyjet who benefitted from a good forward run of last week to win the Brig C D Mohan Memorial Plate (Div II), a race for horses rated 40 to 65. Skyjet had been well fancied last week but could only finish second best but made amends this time out with a powerful burst of speed down the final furlong. Favourite Aliboxer came very wide entering the straight and despite a strong ride by Jagadeesh who made free use of the whip, failed to cover the leeway and had to settle for the runner-up berth. Veni Vidi Vici saved place money by finishing third.

Sharavanan trained Abderus brought off an upset in the upper division of the race. From a handy second position inside the final furlong, Abderus quickened well and spurted away from the challengers to post an emphatic win by a margin of over six lengths, with favourite Amorate being flat-footed in second position. Amorate necked out Secret Touch by a neck and the latter was a similar distance ahead of Bandito.

Michael Eshwer trained Poet outclassed the field in the 1400 metres Planters Plate, a race for horses rated 20 to 46. Poet left field standing after traveling in about the fourth position well into the straight and won by a widening margin of five lengths. The chances of Eloika evaporated the moment Poet got into top gear as the favourite was left to chase the eventual winner without hope. The contest was a total mismatch. Happy Victory was some lengths behind in third position.

Sajid Qureshi trained Velvet Rose hung on gamely to win the 1200 metres Avalanche Star Plate, a race for maiden-two-year olds. The progeny of Nakul Stud Farm bred stallion Pinson, Velvet Rose led from the start and could have been beaten by favourite Brave Admiral if he had kept a straight course. Brave Admiral ran green and when the jockey could get him going in the final stages of the race, the favourite was full of running only to miss the berth by a whisker. Admiral Act was third.

Saddam Hussain drove out Feroz Khan trained Delilah to get the better of Lovely Micmel in the closing stages of the race to claim the 1200 metres Mangalagangotri Plate (Div I), a race for horses rated 0 to 25. Al Dhama let the field in his customary front-running style before weakening. Getafix came into contention from the shortest way home along with Lovely Micmel and Delilah on the wide outside. Closer home, Delilah got the nod with a stronger finish. Roi`s Junior who led the field in the lower division went wide and took some horses along resulting in a huge opening along the centre of the course. Lesser fancied Country`s Charm had an unhindered path and produced an aggressive effort to win the race quite easily in the end from Stride To Success and Roi`s Junior.

Monnappa trained Rustic Sunrise found his bearings after a gap of 350 days when the five-year-old gelding came from the rear position with a terrific burst of speed on the wide outside to measure the field close home to win the 1600 metres Kandla Plate, a race for horses rated 20 to 45. Sivanta had got the better of the rest in the final furlong but was floored by the finishing burst of the eventual winner. Carisa was third.
