Booker Jones gets a winning opportunity

By: Tippu Sultan   August 21 , 2017

Sulaiman Attaollahi trained Booker Jones finally got a winning opportunity after being an amazingly consistent performer when the progeny of Kingda Ka convincingly beat the opposition in the Gr 2 2000 metres Nizam`s Gold Cup, the feature event of Monday`s Hyderabad races. Trevor Patel who requires five more winners to reach the coveted landmark of 1000 winners, booted home the game performer. Trevor is set to leave at the end of the month for a stint at Australia and he is hoping to reach the landmark by that time. Incidentally, Trevor booted home four winners during the day`s action.

Booker Jones who had raced about 37 times had brought stake money almost each time. His last win came 277 days ago at Mumbai but he had earned money consistently by figuring on board despite competing against the top horses in the country. His turn was bound to come and the Nizam`s Cup was an ideal occasion to strike back as the field he was taking on was a modest one. Germanicus who had recently run a close second to Colombiana was made the on money favourite though the four-year-old was short on experience while taking on a tougher lot of horses.

Trevor Patel had Booker Jones lead from the start and though the six-year-old was inclined to run too freely in front, the jockey did well to keep him under control while allowing him to lead by lengths. Booker Jones had a break of a few lengths all through the race. Aika Aika Aika gave hopes of catching up with the front-runner but it was not to be as Booker Jones had enough and more legs to kick clear and won by a comfortable margin of three lengths over Aika Aika Aia who held off favourite Germanicus for the runner-up berth.

Laxman Singh trained Chase Your Dreams recorded his fifth straight win while swamping the opposition in the 1200 metres Basalat Jah Memorial Cup, a race for horses rated 58 to 78. Chase Your Dreams raced up in front and skipped clear in the final furlong to win with ease from Preciosa and Dream Vision. Without Make Up lost some ground at the start and raced a tailed off last before gaining ground in the straight to finish on the frame. The logical step up for Chase The Dreams would be the Colts Championship Stakes but it is quite doubtful whether the trainer has this race as his target.

Prasad Raju trained Ruby`s Gift brought off the biggest upset of the day in the Byerly Brigade Cup (Div I), a race for horses rated 20 to 46. Even though the tote dividends have been crushed because of the huge GST, Ruby`s Gift returned a big dividend on the investment. In the bobbing of heads, with lead alternating between Silver Dollar and Ruby`s Gift, the latter managed to put his head in front at the all-important end. Favourite Charming Beauty had all the chances but failed to change gears when the race came to the boil and finished in the ruck. Lesser fancied Surprise Party lived up to her name by winning the lower division of the race staving off the challenge of fancied Princess of Dreams with a measure of comfort. City Colors held off Abracos for the third place. Favourite Market Leader was not spotted at the busy end.

Leo D`Silva trained Dancing Leaf benefitted by the two good forward runs that she had by winning the 1200 metres K Bhagvan Das Memorial Cup, a race for horses rated 42 to 62. Dancing Leaf surged past the long-time leader Seven Colours with a furlong left in the race and bounced clear. Closer home, Dancing Leaf had enough cushion to win when three others charged home. In a tight finish, Breezeofthesouth snatched the runner up berth from Sweet March and Pentagon. Sequeira trained Ans Ans Ans was well supported to win the lower division of the race. The moment Ans Ans Ans got into a handy position by the final bend, it was clear that she would be a force to reckon with. Ans Ans Ans got strong in the final furlong to easily win the race from Scooby Dooby Doo whose late rally did not have the desired effect.

Trevor Patel drove out New State for a short head win over favourite Takisha in the 1100 metres Cape Knight Plate (Div I), a race for three-year-olds. Takisha led from the start and had enough lead going into the final furlong. Closer home, jockey Deep Shanker looked back to see whether he was safe enough but when he found New State closing in, he rode with renewed vigour. Unfortunately for the jockey, he lost the race by a whisker. This momentary indiscretion on his part is sure to earn him a penalty. Soaring Sensex was a close third. Trevor drove out News O Star to a comfortable win over Royal Green to record his third straight win of the day. Royal Green led into the final furlong but had no answer when News O Star came up with a flourishing run.

Satheesh trained Space Ship won the concluding race of the day, the 1200 metres Subramanya Bharati Plate, a race for horses rated up to 30, in a close finish with Penthesilea and Super Grey. Space Ship cut an erratic course closer home and interfered with Penthesilea. The resultant objection did not find favour with the Stewards as it did not make a material difference to the outcome of the race.
