Siobhan has the opposition stranded in Krishnaraja Trophy

By: Stay Thirsty   September 1 , 2017

Sulaiman Attaollahi trained Siobhan made amazing progress while her opponents showed deterioration in the Gr 3 H H Sri Krishnaraja Wadiyar Memorial Trophy, a terms race for four-year-olds and over, the feature event of Friday`s Mysore races. Siobhan made her presence count over an extended trip for seven furlongs for the first time in her career after being confined mostly to sprints.

Most of the well-performed horses in the fray have seen better times and as such, it was difficult to look to the veterans to deliver the goods. Bold Command has never been a model of consistency; so was Smile Stone whose form was as unpredictable the other horses of the stable. Common Wealth had never been a sound horse. Punters who placed their faith in Siobhan who was a fresh horse without any known niggles hoping that the filly would be able to carry her capability to the extended trip were well rewarded. The daughter of Burden of Proof simply left the others stranded in the final furlong for an emphatic win. The fact that Bangalore based horses were past their prime was indicated by the fact that Mysore based Savannah Sound and Sea Lagoon who had thrived against the modest company, produced good efforts to occupy the slots behind the winner. Barring Siobhan, the rest of the Bangalore performers were eclipsed.

Mickey Mouse in his customary front-running role led the field into the straight with Siobhan in a handy second position. Rounding the final turn, Siobhan moved up impressively to take command. Jockey Sandesh was not required to be forceful on the horse as the filly showed enough resolution to storm clear for a decisive win. Savannah Sound and the late rallying Sea Lagoon occupied the next two spots. Favourite Bold Command was a tame fourth. Smile Stone was never in the hunt. Common Wealth graced the wrong end of the field and stayed put there even in the home stretch. The filly seems to have lost form and since she has a few physical niggles as well, she may well be heading for paddock duties.

Prithviraj trained Silver Ikon had enough lead to last out the 1200 metres B K Krishnadevaraj Urs Memorial Cup, a race for horses rated 40 to 65. Silver Ikon was backed to the exclusion of the rest despite the presence of Ahasan Qureshi in the saddle. Greek Goddess set a scorching pace in front and Silver Ikon chased the front-runner well into the straight before storming ahead in the final furlong. Though Taqdeer Ka Badshah looked formidable towards the closing stages of the race, Silver Ikon had enough cushion to pull through. Fair Game ran on to finish third. Warren Singh trained Lord Buckingham bounced back to winning form with a facile win in the lower division of the race. After chasing Queenofgoodtimes into the straight, Lord Buckingham stormed clear with 300 metres left in the race and won by a widening margin of five lengths over Majestic Style and Tamara.

Hyderabad based jockey Sai Kiran rode a confident race on Here`s Abbey in the 1400 metres Lt Col D K Mistry Memorial Plate, a race for horses 20 to 45. Perhaps his understanding of the horse helped him as the five-year-old mare was off to a poor start and graced the wrong end of the field. He did not panic and steadily worked to improve the position. The fancied runner came into strong contention in the final furlong and bounced clear close home to win from Sans Frontiers and Green Meadow.

Pradeep Annaiah trained Tanishka led all the way and easily won the 1100 metres Squanderer Plate (Div I), a race for horses in the lowest category. Outrider who was also in serious consideration of punters, found the front-runner too strong for comfort and despite her strong surge, found the trip too sharp for comfort. Favourite Black Lightning let down badly. Apprentice jockey Nazerul Alam who steered Tanishka to victory was also astride the winner of the lower division of the race through Bold Runner. The fancied runner was a start to finish winner over Cashmere and Spectre who showed up late.

Jockey Prashanth Dhebe drove out Amazing Red to a start to finish win in the 1600 metres B Shettigeri Plate, a race for horses rated 40 to 65. Amazing Redd looked vulnerable for a while in the final furlong but Dhebe rode the front-runner forcefully to contain the challenge of Flirting Eyes and Native Elements.
