Nascar upsets on a day of shock treatment for punters

By: Frankel   October 28 , 2017

Pune racing this season has proved to be so unpredictable that punters don`t know which way their fortunes swing. After the first four races of the day were won by strong favourites, the rest of the races saw lesser fancied ones or rank outsiders rule the day much to the ruin of the punters who were spurred to take more chances after building up a capital backing the favourites.

Nascar ran well above expectations when collaring the opposition in the 1200 metres Delhi Race Club Trophy, a race for horses rated 80 and above, the feature event of Saturday`s races. With the season-ending in a day, it is only to be expected that the bulk of the runners would be out there to get a mandatory run benefit and as such, it is difficult to make out the real ones from the pretenders.

Undisputed who had been consistent, and Abbey were considered the frontline contenders for the race but in the race, itself, these horses struggled. The character of the track has undergone a change with rains keeping away, the underfoot conditions are very firm which may help some horses and may not suit the others. As such, form fluctuations are only to be expected. Nascar bolted to the front and travelled freely in front and broke away in the straight to win in great style for late-rallying Champagne who showed up after the cause had been lost. Super Sunshine, once a rousing performer has seen been relocated from Bangalore, hadn`t been running to potential. He was off to a habitual lethargic start but showed some aggression in the final furlong and grabbed the third place.

Vishal Gaikwad trained Bateleur showed great improvement after losing to Pure Zinc in the last effort. The progeny of Western Aristocrat who came in for solid support in the betting ring was also carrying an overweight of 1.5 kgs but this had no impact on his chances. After being held up in the rear of the group, Bateleur showed remarkable acceleration when making headway along the rails in the straight. By the final furlong, he had drawn clear of the rest. Daughterofthesun finished second. Texas Gold was a poor third ahead of Gallant Knight who too was not gallant enough in the race.

The first race for two-year-olds under RWITC was the 1000 metres Mayor Baburao Sanas Memorial Million Powered by SRS Group. Desert Pride who is by first season sire of Manjri Stud Farm namely Strong Suit, appeared to tower over the rest on sheer looks and the filly readily justified the expectations with a strong effort in front and drawing clear of the only pursuer Iconia. The winner spared more than seven lengths at the finish.

Timeless Deeds was a letdown last time when stablemate Orion`s Belt had won at long odds. Timeless Deeds went to the post at long odds as it is not always easy to predict when Lagad`s chances pick wings but the handful who reposed faith in the prospects of the filly reaped rich rewards as the lesser fancied runner had the race at her mercy after straightening for home. Timeless Deeds was well clear of Marvel who nosed out Sumaaq for the runner-up berth in the Artois Plate (Div I), a race for horses rated 20 to 46. Divine Magic was squeezed out of contention in the homestretch while making a run along the rails. The lower division of the race was at the mercy of Malesh Narredu trained Take Five who spread-eagled the field. Frosted and Lilac Time occupied the next two slots.

First-timer from Malesh Narredu`s yard Aggregated was well supported to win the 1400 metres Golfing Plate, a race for maiden three-year-olds. Long shot from Faisal Abbas` yards, Cost Nostra made an aggressive foray in front and drew clear of a flat-footed Aggregated in the final furlong to record a win at fancy odds. Star of Thea was third.

The concluding race of the day, the 1000 metres Red Dragon Plate (Div I), a race for horses in the lowest category, also saw a big upset in the form of Knight At Arms who had given no indication of a winning performance in all his efforts in the last two seasons. Knight At Arms held on resolutely to win by a nose from Highland Princess who was relatively better fancied. Adele was very much in the reckoning but failed to add punch in her finishing effort and was a close third, a nose and neck separating the first three-placed horses. The lower division of the race was won by Shiraz Sunderji trained Multistar who stormed clear of the rest in the final 200 metres to win as she pleased at good odds. Favourite Emotionless showed no emotion or motion to have a say in the finish and was a timid second ahead of Sarrazin.

Pesi Shroff`s classic hope Zenon who had finished fifth in the Kingfisher Bangalore Derby in July was making a comeback on the track in the 2000 metres Nitrous Plate, a race for horses rated 40 to 66. With his imposing credentials, Zenon overwhelmed the opposition to win with great ease from Glorious Eyes and Simon Says.
