Vijay Singham nails Consigliori on the post

By: Tippu Sultan   December 16 , 2019

Laxman Singh trained Vijay Singham produced a powerful burst of speed in the final furlong to nail the front running Consigliori on the post to win the Gr 2 Golconda 2000 Guineas, the second classic of the season, in an absorbing finish at Malakpet on Monday. Favourite My Journey who finished off the frame returned bleeding from both the nostrils.

Laxman Singh`s another ward My Journey who had recorded three straight wins was installed the strong favourite to have a bold show even though no one knew how he would fare over the extended trip of a mile as all his wins had come over a shorter distance. Deccan Derby winner Consigliori was the second favourite while the rest were all quoted at big odds. Vijay Singham who was once highly rated had returned to the racetrack only this season after an injury to the hoof had kept out of action and he had won a race and then lost rather tamely in his next outing during the season thus losing the aura about him.

David Allan who came in as a replacement for the indisposed Trevor Patel had Consigliori lead from the start. The progeny of Air Support enjoyed a healthy uncontested lead with Majestic Warrior in proximity. My Journey was settled in about the fourth position while Vijay Singham graced the rear. Consigliori shaped like a winner when he approached the final furlong as he had a good cushion and those who were in the chase looked beat. The complexion of the race changed when Srinath brought Vijay Singham with a ground-saving effort and angled out the horse to get a clear run in the final furlong. The progeny of Leitir Mor produced an aggressive effort and with Srinath going all out, got the better of the front-runner in the closing strides of the race to record an exciting win. Srinath`s saddle appeared to have moved to the neck of the horse and the jockey was extremely skilful under the circumstances to induce to a vigorous effort from the horse despite the inconvenience caused by the saddle which had moved. He appeared to have taken his feet off from the stirrup possibly to get better balance under the circumstances. It was indeed a splendid feat on the part of the veteran jockey. Victory Parade ran on to take the third position ahead of Mumbai challenger Majestic Warrior. This was the first classic success for the Poonawalla resident stallion Leitir Mor. Incidentally, the first two classics of the season have both been claimed by local horses which doesn`t happen too frequently.

It required an all-out effort on the part of the jockey David Allan to enable Her Legacy to get the better of Yours Forever in the closing stride of the 1200 metres Telangana and Andhra Sub Area Cup, a race for horses rated 40 to 65. Yours Forever who led from the start had a good cushion going into the final 100 metres with Celeritas essaying a strong challenge and Her Legacy having to cover some leeway on the front-runner. Under a forceful ride by David Allan, the Prasad Raju trainee managed to neck out Yours Forever on the post to record an encore. Celeritas was third ahead of Strategist.

David Allan made good use of the chance ride to record a double. Prasad Raju trained Mystery was backed to the exclusion of the rest in the lower division of the 1100 metres Silky Baby Plate (Div II), a race for horses rated 20 to 45. David Allan drove out Mystery to take command of the race inside the final furlong and the favourite skipped clear to win the race with ease from Aristocrats Charm and the late rallying Bar Et Law. Donald Netto trained Incredulous justified the strong favouritism in the lower division of the race by storming ahead at the top of the straight to record an easy win over Troubadour and Bedazzled.

The Vittal Deshmukh trained Egyptian Prince swept everyone off their feet from the word go to win the 1600 metres Taramati Cup, a race for horses rated 40 to 65. Ajeeth Kumar took Egyptian Prince in customary fashion to the front and the lesser fancied runner enjoyed a good break all through to eventually check-in by a margin of three lengths. The unbeaten run of Guiding Force ended as he could not bridge the gap in the final furlong and had to settle for the runner-up berth ahead of Lockhart.

Despite cutting an erratic course in the final furlong, favourite Coastal Cruise had enough firepower to win the 1400 metres Palampet Plate, a race for maiden two-year-olds. Coastal Cruise who stormed into the lead with a furlong left in the race drifted out of the straight course and Lightning Power made a good rally along the rails, but the favourite was too good and won in the hands of jockey Dashrath Singh. Mark My Day showed some flourish but failed to sustain and finished a close third behind Lightning Power.

Satyanarayana trained City of Blossom had no problem in tackling the opposition in the 1400 metres RWITC Plate, a race for horses rated 20 to 45. Backed strongly in the ring, City of Blossom tracked Red Snapper into the straight before distancing himself from the rest to win by a widening margin of three lengths. Red Snapper stayed put in the second position ahead of the fancied Green Turf who failed miserably.

Jockey Akshay Kumar brought Golden Hope with a well-timed run in the final furlong to get past the front-running favourite Human Touch to land the spoils in the 1200 metres Pocharam Plate, a race for horses rated 20 to 45. Patron Saint made a late rally to be a suggestive third.

Apprentice jockey Afroz Khan who is finding winners hard to come by after enjoying a good run last season guided Stormy with al the resources at his command to contain the strong challenge of Vashishta to win the 1600 metres Bakranangal Plate, a race for horses rated 20 to 45. After Stormy shot ahead in the final furlong, jockey B R Kumar brought Vashishta with a powerful effort but the front-runner just about held on to win by a narrow margin. Solo Winner ran on to take the third position ahead of favourite Tiger of the Sea.
