Juliette runs away with Indian Oaks

By: Frankel   January 18 , 2020

Karthik Ganapathy trained Juliette recorded a spectacular win in the Gr 1 Indian Oaks in an impressive timing of two minutes 29.86 seconds at the Mahalakshmi on Saturday. Well Connected was second more than five lengths adrift while another Bangalore challenger Thailand was third three and a quarter length adrift of the runner-up. Irish jockey Colm O`Donoghue rode a perfect race on the winner.

The race had an open look about it though going by the extended trip, it was expected to be confined to Juliette and Well connected as Gift of Grace was reckoned to have too much speed to last out the gruelling trip. Though Juliette had a hesitant beginning, Donoghue moved up on the fancied runner to position the filly in about the fifth position as Notoriety set the pace. Gift of Grace was in the second position followed by Thailand, See The Dream, Juliette, Well Connected and the rest with Armaity bringing up the rear.

Gift of Grace was pushed to take over the running well before the final turn by jockey David Egan, but it was clear that she was leading on sufferance as the field was closing up. Even as David Allan was working hard on Well Connected to quicken along the rails, Juliette showed up on the wide outside with a blistering turn of foot and had the race sewn up a long way from home. Well Connected ran on to get the better of Thailand to take the second position. Armaity rallied in the straight to finish fourth.

Malesh Narredu trained California trounced the opposition in the Gr 3 Gool S Poonawalla Million, a terms race for three-year-olds. California who had finished an impressive second to Monarchos also enjoyed the pull in weight over the horses which had won their maiden outings. Exotic Queen had the speed to lead the field with Recall of You in proximity while California was eased in about the fourth position by jockey Trevor Patel. Exotic Queen led the field in the stretch on sufferance because the moment Trevor asked for a big effort from the favourite, the progeny of Speaking of Which produced a tremendous turn of foot and went storming clear to win by a widening margin of seven lengths. Lady Lanette was second ahead of Flame of Thea who overcame a lethargic beginning and ran on to take the third position ahead of the fancied Recall of You. California appears to a good type of youngster whose next target could be the Breeders Produce Stakes.

Altaf Hussain trained Silver Flames swamped the opposition in the 1200 metres P D Avasia Trophy, a race for horses rated 60 to 86. The race had an open look about it with three horses led by Golden Quest in the betting. Joplin had the lead going into the final furlong but failed to sustain as Silver Flames flew on the wide outside, swept past those in front to eventually win by a widening margin of two lengths. Joplin held off Flaming Martini while Golden Quest gave up the moment he came under pressure.

Apprentice jockey Prakash showed great resolution in driving out long shot My Precious to victory in the 1400 metres R R Byramji Trophy, a race for horses rated 40 to 66. Last start winner Mirabilis and Majestic Warrior were the market fancies. Prakash pushed My Precious to the front from the start with Majestic Warrior in hot pursuit. Inside the final furlong, Majestic Warrior appeared to have measured the front-runner when he put his head in front, but the persevering efforts of Prakash saw My Precious regain the advantage and went on to win by a length. Golden Hind ran on late to nose out Majestic Warrior who flattered to deceive. Mirabilis did not give hope for her supporters at any stage of the race.

Noshir Cama trained Polyneices was the medium of a successful touch in the1400 metres Yawar Rashid Trophy, a race for horses rated 20 to 46. The last run of Polyneices at Pune had come in for critical scrutiny of the Stewards. Backed with conviction, Polyneices bolted to the front with a furlong left in the race and had no problem in winning the race from the late rallying Cormorant and Hodson`s Horse.

Vishal Gaikwad trained Tudor Hall came in for one-sided betting in the1600 metres Rao Saheb D K Parkar Trophy, a race for horses rated 20 to 46. Tudor Hall struggled for speed throughout the stretch and was a beaten cause by the final furlong. Power of Thor snatched the lead in the final furlong and just about managed to win by a whisker over late finishing Fanfare who covered acres of ground in the final moments of the race. Mount Moriah who led most of the way weakened to finish third and reportedly came back lame. Tudor Hall was a disappointing fourth.

Lesser fancied Conscience overwhelmed the opposition in the 1000 metres Tricumdas Dwarkadas Trophy (Div II), a race for horses rated 20 to 46. Luminosity came in for one-sided support, but the favourite was never in the hunt not and much money went down the drain with the punters not even getting a run for their money. After Brave led deep into the straight, Conscience moved up with raking strides from about the fourth position and had the race in control inside the final 100 metres. Isinit ran on late to take the second position ahead of Falconette who reportedly returned sore after the race.
