Tootsie Roll has it easy in the feature

By: Tippu Sultan   February 10 , 2020

Leo D`Silva trained Tootsie Roll floored the opposition with a powerful run down the final furlong to win the 1200 metres Lingapur Cup (Div I), a race for horses rated 60 to 85, the feature event of Monday`s Hyderabad races. Tootsie Roll who was quoted at 10 to 1 in the ring thus recorded his fifth win from 39 outings. Interestingly, the six-year-old has hit the board on 20 occasions. Tight finishes were the order of the day with trainer Hilton Sequeira saddling three winners and jockey Suraj Narredu being successful on two of his mounts.

Sequeira trained Trump Girl was expected to record an encore and was strongly backed to win with the rest of the runners all quoted at nourishing odds. The speedy Happy Together led the field deep into the stretch with Trump Girl trying hard to catch up with the front-runner. Even as these two horses were battling it out, Tootsie Girl who was produced on the wide outside by jockey Imran Chisty devoured ground and stormed clear close to home and won with a measure of comfort. Happy Together held off Trump Girl to keep the runner-up berth.

Suraj Narredu`s riding made a difference to the fortunes of favourite NRI Power in the 1200 metres lower division of the Lingapur Cup, a race for horses rated 60 to 85. Warrior Supreme who led from the start put up a dogged resistance with NRI Power lugging in and giving problems to the jockey. Suraj managed to keep his horse going and managing to get the better of the front-runner and then kept his horse in front even as Starlight came up with her patented late burst on the wide outside. Warrior Supreme was third half a length behind.

Apprentice jockey Santosh Raj got the first win of his career when he rode favourite The Great Gatsby to a comfortable win in the 1600 metres R M Reddy Memorial Plate, race for horses rated 40 to 65. The Great Gatsby had won last time out over an extended trip and was expected to maintain the winning form. The odds on him were generous because of the presence of Santosh Raj who was yet to win a race after City of Blossom whom he had beaten had won in the earlier race. The Great Gatsby hit the front from the word `go` and enjoyed the uncontested lead and skipped clear in the final furlong to win by a margin of over two lengths. Reno Star held off Miss Marvellous and Artistryy in a close finish to get the runner-up berth. Apollo who was bidding for a hat-trick and Ayur Shakti who had won four races in a row performed below expectations.

Hilton Sequeira trained Honourable Guest came out of the maidens` ranks in her 14th attempt when she held on grimly to win from Recumbentibus and late rallying favourite Wings of Eagles the 2000 metres The Rock of Gibraltar Plate, a race for horses rated up to 25. Jockey Mukesh Kumar had Honourable Guest race behind pace-setter Symbol of Stars and pushed the lesser fancied runner to take charge inside the final 300 metres. Honourable Guest had enough lead when both Recumbentibus and Wings of Eagles from the rear began to cover ground and reached the safety of the post before she could be overhauled.

Long shot Promiseofhappiness from the stables of Donald Netto pulled off a thrilling win over favourite Nova Scotia to win the 1400 metres Northern Dancer Plate (Div II), a race for horses rated 20 to 45. Jockey Suraj Narredu managed to force his way on Nova Scotia through a difficult passage inside the final furlong and had the initiative but closer home, a host of horses charged towards the post. Promiseofhappiness managed to head Nova Scotia at the post despite jockey Vikrant losing his reins at the finish. Rhine and Tiger of the Sea too flashed home with strong efforts and finished in the order mentioned with a neck and nose separating them from the runner-up. Nova Scotia hung in badly which made things difficult for Suraj and he was also held up and had to switch to get a clear run which had a bearing on the chances of the favourite.

Jockey Mukesh Kumar aggressively drove out City of Blossom to prevail in the lower division of the 1200 metres Members Cup, a race for horses rated 40 to 65. City of Blossom was drawn wide and the jockey could not take a forward position early and had to bring the well-backed favourite on the wide outside. City of Blossom responded well to the urgings and managed to get the better of Dancing Doll and then held off the late flourish of Kamyar with a measure of comfort. The first four finishers were within striking reach of each other. Sreekant trained Strategist came up with a rally in the hands of jockey Suraj Narredu to nail Soviet Pride in the closing strides of the race to win the upper division of the Members Cup. Best In Show who was running after a gap of 91 days came in for strong support but the favourite, after staying in touch till the final furlong, weakened to go out of the reckoning. Soviet Pride who had the lead in the final 100 metres shaped to win but was beaten by the late flourish of Strategist close to the post.

Robin Reddy trained Suresine recorded a sensational last stride win over Alliston in the 1400 metres Northern Dancer Plate (Div II), a race for horses rated 20 to 45. Alliston looked the likely winner as she had held off the challenge of Platinum Classz but Suresine came home with a terrific burst of speed on the wide outside and in the bobbing of heads got the nod in the concluding stride of the race by the proverbial whisker. Platinum Classz was another short head behind the runner-up.
