Spanish Beauty outclasses the opposition

  February 27 , 2020

Arjun Mangalorkar trained Spanish Beauty produced a tremendous burst of speed in the final furlong to leave the field stranded in the final 100 metres to win the 1200 metres Narasimharaja Trophy, a race for horses rated 40 to 65, the feature event of Thursday`s Bangalore races. Last start winner Knotty Oak who was backed to the exclusion of the rest ran dismally to finish down the field.

Knotty Oak had won over seven furlongs in impressive fashion and was considered good enough to win over the sprint as the others in the field hadn`t performed with any degree of consistency. Spanish Beauty had been a letdown after promising much as a juvenile. After the speedy Side Winder led the field into the straight, David Allan pushed Royal Resolution to take over the running. The progeny of Western Aristocrat went sailing clear but slackened in the final 100 metres. Spanish Beauty who was outpaced in the stretch warmed up to the task approaching the final furlong after being pulled out. Spanish Beauty flew home to win with ease from late rallying Blue Moon who held off Regal Music to get the runner-up berth. Royal Resolution weakened to end up fourth.

Imran Chisty drove out Arjun Mangalorkar trained Baltimore to make a winning debut in the 1100 metres Man O War Plate, a race for maiden three-year-olds. The race had an open look about as several runners in the fray were making their debut and those who had the benefit of a run did not stand out by their performances. Jockey Pradeep Chouhan took Prithviraj trained Shanaey on a start to finish mission and the fancied runner shaped to win but in the closing stages of the race, the finishing burst of Baltimore put paid to his hopes. Bellator headed Cherokee Moon to get the third position.

Aggressive riding by jockey David Allan enabled Padmanabhan trained Crack of Dawn to get the better of Aferpi in a thrilling battle for supremacy for the 2000 metres Malaprabha Plate, a race for horses rated 30 to 50. Aferpi led from the start with Crack of Dawn in proximity while the others were spaced out behind. Entering the homestretch, Aferpi was strongly challenged by Crack of Dawn and these two horses fought all the way in the stretch before the latter emerged stronger in the shadow of the post. Show Girl was third more than three lengths adrift.

Azhar Ali trounced the opposition notwithstanding the perception in the betting ring in the 1200 metres Flashing Star Plate, a race for horses in the lowest category. Kishan Thomas trained Hawking came in for one-sided support but the favourite after leading the field into the straight had nothing much left in the tank when Dontbreaktherules put pressure inside the final 300 metres. Dontbreaktherules stormed clear and won pulling up. Reverence, Elite Agent and Hawking disputed for the minor placings with a short head each separating these horses in the order mentioned. Dontbreaktherules had been withdrawn on the last occasion as he had reared up and bolted but his previous run was suggestive of an early win.

Neil Darashah trained Le Marc recorded an encore without facing any serious challenge from the others in the 1400 metres Netravati Plate (Div I), a race for horses rated 15 to 35. Le Marc bounced clear with a furlong left in the race overhauling the long-time leader Fictioneer and won sparing two lengths at the finish. The fancied Hafnium ran on late to get the third position by heading Honey Trap at the finish. The lower division of the Netravati Plate saw long shot Industrialist from the stables of Dheeraj bringing off an upset, prevailing over lesser fancied Red Indian by the proverbial whisker. Limato who came in for big support in the betting ring had the lead going into final 300 metres but did not do much under pressure. Industrialist shot ahead and was strongly challenged by Red Indian but the former just before survived to win the race. Turf Prospector, as is his wont, came up with a late bid and finished third. Incidentally, Industrialist was winning after waiting for a whopping 1293 days!

Dominic trained Silver Swift broke the maidens ranks in the eighth attempt winning the 1200 metres Gaganachukki Plate (Div I), a race for horses rated 15 to 35. The betting trend indicated a three-way contest among Torosanto, Sun Splash and Silver Swift. Torosanto took over the running after travelling the first furlong chased by Silver Swift and the rest. Sun Splash was several lengths adrift of the front-runner. Inside the final furlong, Silver Swift managed to get the better of Torosanto and surged ahead. Sun Splash came up with a futile late charge to occupy the second position while Torosanto weakened to occupy the third position. A good ride by apprentice jockey Sameer Quereshi enabled Prithviraj trained Mr Humble to pull off a narrow win over late finishing Augustina in the lower division of the race. Mr Humble was baulked for a clear run inside the final furlong but Quereshi swiftly angled out his horse to get a clear run. Mr Humble produced a good effort to sail past the front-running Skiathos and the four-year-old had enough legs to see off the threat of Augstina.
