Conscious Gift wins with a late flourish

By: Tippu Sultan   December 27 , 2020

Leo D`Silva trained Conscious Gift came up with a late flourish to win the 1200 metres Crack Regiment Plate, a race for horses rated 40 to 65, the feature event of Sunday`s Hyderabad races held at Malakpet. Conscious Gift ran green in the stretch before finding his rhythm with a powerful run down the middle to grab the lead from Apollo close to home and then held off the late finishing Apollo to land the spoils.

The three-year-old Conscious Gift was strongly favoured to win the race. Sporting Smile led by lengths deep into the straight before the ill-effects of going at such a pace saw the filly slowing down in the final furlong. In the meanwhile, jockey Akshay Kumar was busy on Conscious Gift who took time to warm up. After trying to come through the middle, Akshay shifted out the favourite to the wide outside. The progeny of Speaking of Which covered the leeway on Apollo with ease and then headed for home for a comfortable win. Rhythm Selection was full of running at the finish and the four-year-old managed to head Apollo at the post to get the runner-up berth.

Despite making his debut, Srinivas Reddy trained Ashwa Raudee ran like a matured horse, keeping a straight course and was firmly in command of the the race from the beginning and easily tackled the challenge of favourite Galwan in the 1200 metres Galactica Plate, a race for maiden two-year-olds. Galwan who had finished more than 13 lengths behind in her last effort was surprisingly the more preferred horse. In the event, Trevor who took Ashwa Raudee to the front had no problem in staying put there to eventually check-in by more than two lengths. Galwan chased the front-runner without hope. Baudelaire finished with a purpose to take the third position.

Hilton Sequeira trained King Roger showed good improvement when winning the 1400 metres Zurbaran Plate (Div I), a race for horses rated 20 to 45 for three-year-olds and over for horses which haven`t won a race. The extended trip of seven furlongs perhaps suited King Roger fine as he came home with a big effort to take charge with about 100 metres left in the race and won easily from late finishing Castlerock. Just Incredible who raced up with the pace stayed on to take the third position while favourite Amyra who did not get a brisk start was never in the hunt and finished a poor fourth. Suraj Narredu produced fancied Saffron Art from way off the pace in the Division II of the race. The favourite was up to the task of covering the leeway close to home and with from Crazy Horse who took the second post by a neck from Look of Love. Akshay Kumar managed to get Peaky Blinders to produce a powerful dash in the final 100 metres despite the horse running green. The favourite Peaky Blinders managed to nose out Beautiful Luv who had assumed command along the rails and was shaping like a winner to claim the Division III of the race. Chuckit was a close third.

The top weight did not make any difference to the chances of favourite Horus who trounced the opposition in the 1600 metres Solitaire Plate (Div I), a race for horses rated 20 to 45. Horus chased Nova Scotia into the straight and asserted his supremacy very quickly and stretched clear in the final furlong to win by a widening margin of five lengths. Nova Scotia held off Sun Dancer to keep the runner-up berth. In keeping with the trend of favourites winning, Laxman Singh trained Forever Splendour who was a short-priced favourite had no problem in obliging expectations in the lower division of the race in the hands of jockey Trevor Patel. Forever Splendour chased Secret Command into the straight before overhauling the front-runner with the jockey hardly having to move a muscle. Forever Splendor stretched clear and won by a shade less than four lengths over Super Angel. Explosive for another six-plus lengths behind in the third position.
